One of several 'Gentleman Jims' in the game, Dickinson was never cautioned by a referee in 764 league appearances for Portsmouth. The England International's entire career as player and manager with one club is admirably covered. - A Football Compendium, Peter J. Seddon (1999).

Club Career

Club(s) Played his schoolboy football in Hampshire and joined Alton Youth Club. He was spotted by Portsmouth FC, who signed him as an amateur in 1943, turning professional in January 1944. He made 764 league appearances and retired April 1965.

Management Career

Club(s) Upon retiring in April 1965, Dickinson remained with Pompey who became the Public Relations Officer and Scout. He stepped into the secretary's shoes in July 1968. Then became the manager between April 1977 until May 1979.
