København of Denmark. Adam Crozier, the FA's Chief Executive,
revealed that Hodgson was one of three candidates to replace Keegan, the

successive wins. |
|
Backroom Staff |
Eriksson chose
fellow-Swede Tord Grip to be his assistant. Over the five years in
charge, Steve McClaren and Brian Kidd were his main coaches. Sammy
Lee was also appointed as a coach. Ray Clemence was the goalkeeping
coach. Gary Lewin his physiotherapist. |

|
Management Career |
|
Club(s) |
Returned
to coaching in July 2007 with Manchester City FC. His helm was held for
one season and he left City 'by mutual consent' on 2 June 2008. A day
later, he was installed as manager of the Mexican national team. He was
sacked on 2 April 2009 after thirteen matches in charge, winning and
losing six matches each. Eriksson was installed as Notts County FC's
Director of Football on 22 July 2009, but false promises and mounting
debts meant Eriksson would resign on 11 February 2010. He was back
with the
Côte d'Ivoire national team on 25 March 2010, and despite turning
around the country's fortunes, Eriksson was never offered another contract
and left on 25 June. He returned to England and Championship team
Leicester City FC on 3 October 2010, but despite turning City into
favourites, Eriksson left on 24 October 2011 with City laying in
mid-table. Eriksson applied for the vacant managerial spot at Leeds
United AFC in February 2012. |

Notes
Eriksson's
intelligence and thoroughness, as impressive as his team's performance,
initially had even the tabloid press gushing praise. As he
approached his second year in the job,
however, there was grumbling that he does not meet with the media
often enough and that he imparts little information even when he
does. Following tabloid disclosure of his alleged affair with a
television personality, his private life became front-page news, and
there were reports that he might leave if the media continued to delve
into personal matters.
England's
quarterfinal elimination from World Cup 2002 prompted the first
significant criticisms of Eriksson's performance as coach.
Unfavourable reviews were in the minority, however, and England's
sixth-place World Cup showing meant his job was secure. The only
question was whether Eriksson himself wanted to stay on. He said
he intended to honour his contract, which does not run out until after
the next World Cup in 2006.
Much
more heated and widespread criticism followed England's disappointing
home 2-2 draw against FYR Macedonia in a European Championship 2004
qualification match in October, 2002 and a desultory 3-1 home loss to Australia
in a friendly in February, 2003. But England's pair of 2-0 wins against
Liechtenstein away and Turkey at home in late March and early April and their
2-1 win against Slovakia at home in June put them in contention for first place
in the qualification group and brought at least a lull in media sniping.
England's record in competitive matches under Eriksson remains superb. - PY
