Notes
Eriksson's
intelligence and thoroughness, as impressive as his team's performance,
initially had even the tabloid press gushing praise. As he
approached his second year in the job,
however, there was grumbling that he does not meet with the media
often enough and that he imparts little information even when he
does. Following tabloid disclosure of his alleged affair with a
television personality, his private life became front-page news, and
there were reports that he might leave if the media continued to delve
into personal matters.
England's
quarterfinal elimination from World Cup 2002 prompted the first
significant criticisms of Eriksson's performance as coach.
Unfavourable reviews were in the minority, however, and England's
sixth-place World Cup showing meant his job was secure. The only
question was whether Eriksson himself wanted to stay on. He said
he intended to honour his contract, which does not run out until after
the next World Cup in 2006.
Much
more heated and widespread criticism followed England's disappointing
home 2-2 draw against FYR Macedonia in a European Championship 2004
qualification match in October, 2002 and a desultory 3-1 home loss to Australia
in a friendly in February, 2003. But England's pair of 2-0 wins against
Liechtenstein away and Turkey at home in late March and early April and their
2-1 win against Slovakia at home in June put them in contention for first place
in the qualification group and brought at least a lull in media sniping.
England's record in competitive matches under Eriksson remains superb. - PY
