Ron Greenwood - Biographical Facts

Full name Ronald Greenwood.
Born  11 November 1921 in Burnley.
Died 9 February 2006 in Suffolk, following a long illness.

Playing Career

Club Centre-half, Bradford Park Avenue December, 1945; transferred to Brentford FC March, 1949; transferred to Chelsea FC 21 October, 1952; transferred to Fulham FC February, 1955; ended Football League career at close of 1955-56 season.
International None for England's senior side, but one England B team appearance.

Managerial Career

Prior experience Assistant manager Arsenal FC November, 1958; manager England Youth and Under-23 teams, years not known; West Ham United FC 13 April, 1961 to July, 1974, when he became general manager.
England tenure Appointed temporary manager 17 August 1977 and manager 12 December 1977; resigned following World Cup 1982 final tournament.
Other applicants Bobby Robson and Brian Clough were both favourites to land the England job in 1977.  Dave Sexton was also an applicant.
First England match Match No. 515, 7 September 1977, England 0 Switzerland 0, friendly match at Empire Stadium in Wembley.
Last England match Match No. 569, 5 July 1982, Spain 0 England 0, World Cup final tournament match at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid.

England team honours Winners of the British Championship 1977-78, 1978-79 and 1981-82.
Individual honours CBE, 1981; Football Writers' Association Tribute Award for outstanding contribution to the national game 1983; Professional Footballers Association Merit Award in 1985; Football Association Hall of Fame 2002.
Distinction The only England manager, apart from Alf Ramsey, whose team finished a World Cup final tournament unbeaten (although Greenwood's team did not even advance to the semifinals).
Backroom staff Ron Greenwood chose Bill Taylor as his Chief Coach.  Don Howe later became an assistant manager.  Geoff Hurst was also a coach.  Fred Street was a physiotherapist and trainer.  Norman Medhurst a physiotherapist.  Dr Vernon Edwards was the team doctor.
