Playing Career

Club Right fullback; Southampton FC, April, 1944; Tottenham Hotspur FC May, 1949; Football League career ended 1955.
International England, 32 appearances, 3 goals, from Match No. 244, 2 December 1948, England 6 Switzerland 0, friendly match at Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, London to Match No. 284, 25 November 1953, England 3 Hungary 6, friendly match at Empire Stadium in Wembley.

Managerial Career

Prior experience Ipswich Town F.C., 8 August 1955 to 29 April 1963.
England tenure Appointed 25 October 1962 effective 1 May 1963, taking charge for two matches before the appointment became formally effective, against France on 27 February 1963 and Scotland on 6 April 1963; dismissed 19 April 1974 with announcement delayed until 1 May 1974.
Other applicants Two men were in the running, Ramsey and Burnley player Jimmy Adamson.  When Adamson declined the offer, the road was open for Ramsey to take the job.
First England match No. 366, 27 February 1963, France 5 England 2, European Championship preliminary match at Parc des Princes in Paris.
