The Thirty-Seven Pre-War Hat-tricks Scored by England

1 & 2 1881-82

(2) 18 February 1882, 13-0 vs. Ireland, Knock Road, Belfast
21 year-old debutant Howard Vaughton could be the first Englishman to score a hat-trick, eventually scoring five goals in total, scoring his first after three minutes.
23 year-old, also debutant, Arthur Brown also scored a hat-trick in the same match, scoring his first in the fifteenth minute, ending with four goals in total. In either case, their third goals came in an unknown order and in unknown times.


3 1882-83

3 February 1883, 5-0 vs. Wales, Surrey Cricket Ground, Kennington
20 year-old (& 348 days) Clem Mitchell scores three goals to celebrate his third appearance. His first goal came in the 16th minute, his hat-trick, England's first at hat-trick on home ground, was complete in the 86th minute. Mitchell will remain the youngest scorer of a hat-trick for the next 44 years.


4 & 5 1883-84

(2) 23 February 1884, 8-1 vs. Ireland, Ulster Cricket Ground, Belfast
25 year-old Charlie Bambridge scores the first England hat-trick in a British Championship match. His first goal was in the 18th minute, and completed by the time he was injured in the 75th minute.
followed by a second hat-trick by
24 year-old Harry Cursham, he had scored his first goal shortly after Bambridge's first, and completed just after Bambridge's third. Both players were winning their eighth appearance.


6 1885-86

13 March 1886, 6-1 vs. Ireland, Ulster Cricket Ground, Belfast
21 year-old Ben Spilsbury scores four goals on his second appearance, His first goal was an equaliser scored well after the 20th minute, and his second came soon after, whilst his next two both came at some point during the second half.


7 1886-87

5 February 1887, 7-0 vs. Ireland, Bramall Lane, Sheffield
Winning his fourth appearance, 21 year-old Tinsley Lindley scores three goals, the first in the 26th minute, his third in the 49th minute, evidently making him the quickest to complete a hat-trick so far...23 minutes.


8 & 9 1887-88

4 February 1888, 5-1 vs. Wales, Alexandra Recreation Ground, Crewe
24 year-old Fred Dewhurst scores three goals on his sixth appearance, the first coming in the 16th minute, the last coming just before the full-time whistle.
7 April 1888, 5-1 vs. Ireland, Ulster Cricket Ground,
Belfast
On his 21st birthday, debutant Albert Allen scores three goals, his first in the 14th minute, and his hat-trick was complete on the hour. Allen becomes the youngest player to score a hat-trick on his first England appearance

10 1888-89

2 March 1889, 6-1 vs. Ireland, Anfield Road, Liverpool
The tenth England hat-trick was scored by 28 year-old (& 58 days) debutant Jack Yates in his only appearance. The eighth against Ireland. The first, a 22nd minute overhead kick, the following two goals have unknown timings
. What is known though, Yates is now the oldest scorer of an England hat-trick - until 1908.


11 1889-90

15 March 1890, 9-1 vs. Ireland, Ulster Cricket Ground, Belfast
22 year-old debutant Fred Geary probably scored three goals, possibly only two, maybe up to five. But if he did not, then Nat Walton or Bill Townley could have. It's a mess.... move on. We don't really know who scored the nine goals, even less so the timings
.


12-14 1892-93

25 February 1893, 6-1 vs. Ireland, Wellington Road Football Ground, Handsworth
23 year-old debutant Walter Gilliat scores three goals, the tenth hat-trick against Ireland, all in the first half. His first came after eight minutes, his third after thirty. Beating the previous record of quickest hat-trick by a minute.
13 March 1893, 6-0 vs. Wales, Victoria Ground, Stoke-upon-Trent
23 year-old debutant Fred Spiksley scores three goals on his debut, the first after 25 minutes, the completion after 88 minutes.
1 April 1893, 5-2 vs. Scotland, Athletic Ground, Richmond
Fred Spiksley is the first player to score two hat-tricks, his second hat-trick in his second appearance, taking him just six minutes to do score two volleys and a header, and for the first time, a hat-trick is scored in each of this season's matches

15 1893-94

24 year-old debutant John Veitch scores three goals from three shots, the first in the thirtieth minute and the last in the last ten minutes

16 1895-96

22 year-old Steve Bloomer scored five goals. On his fourth appearance, Bloomer scored his first after 25 minutes, completing his hat-trick on the hour. Before adding another two in the last seven minutes

20 February 1897, 6-0 vs. Ireland, Trent Bridge, Nottingham
27 year-old debutant Fred Wheldon scores three goals, the first, a free-kick, after 27 minutes, and being completed by virtue of a scrimmage in the 55th minute

18 & 19 1898-99

(2) 18 February 1899, 13-2 vs. Ireland, Roker Park Ground, Sunderland
For the third time since 1882, Ireland are the recipients of a double hat-trick. 26 year-old captain Gilbert Smith, making his fourtenth appearance, was first with his. Scoring his first after 32 minutes, and his third on 60 minutes. He then added a fourth three minutes later. The first captain to score a hattrick.
23 year-old debutant
Jimmy Settle completed his hat-trick after 80 minutes, having scored his first on the 53rd minute. He is the tenth player to score a hat-trick on his debut.


20 1900-01

18 March 1901, 6-0 vs. Wales, St. James' Park, Newcastle upon Tyne
The twentieth hat-trick scored by England, is the second scored by top goalscorer Steve Bloomer, now a 27 year-old making his thirteenth appearance. He scored his first goal, a fast, high, shot, after 35 minutes, and completed his hat-trick after 80 minutes, ending with a fourth goal three minutes later.


21-24 1907-08

16 March 1908, 7-1 vs. Wales, The Racecourse, Wrexham
28 year-old (& 287 days) captain Vivian Woodward scores three goals on his eleventh appearance, becoming the oldest to score a hat-trick so far. His first goal, off his head, came after 18 minutes, and he completed his hat-trick five minutes from the end. The second captain to score a hattrick.
(2) 8 June 1908, 11-1 vs. Austria, Hohe Warte Stadion, Wien
29 year-old (& 5 days) captain Vivian Woodward scores a second hat-trick for England. His first goal on his fourteenth appearance, came after four minutes, and he completed his hat-trick after 55 minutes, adding a fourth goal later. The first captain to score a hatrick in two matches.
24 year-old debutant Frank Bradshaw scores three goals, his first coming in the 19th minute, completing his hat-trick a minute after Woodward scored his fourth. It will turn out to be his only appearance.
10 June 1908, 7-0 vs. Hungary, Millenáris Sportpálya, Buda-pesth
22 year-old George Hilsdon scores the third England hat-trick in as many days, scoring four goals on his sixth appearance. Hilsdon completed his hat-trick in the 71st minute, after scoring his first in the 28th minute. He then added a fourth goal two minutes from the end.


25 & 26 1908-09

31 May 1909, 8-2 vs. Hungary, Millenáris Sportpálya, Buda-pesth
 29 year-old (& 361 days) captain Vivian Woodward scores his third hat-trick for England, creating a new record on his twentieth appearance. His first goal came after twelve minutes, and he completed his hat-trick after 55 minutes, adding a fourth goal three minutes later. The first captain to score three hattricks.
1 June 1909, 8-1 vs. Austria, Hohe Warte Stadion, Wien
Captain
Vivian Woodward scores his second hat-trick of the tour and a record fourth hat-trick for England, adding to the record he set a day previously. The timings of the goals are unknown. The first captain to score four hattricks.


27 1911-12

10 February 1912, 6-1 vs. Ireland, Dalymount Park, Dublin
24 year-old Harold Fleming scores the fourteenth hat-trick against Ireland in thirty years. Making his eighth appearance, Fleming scored his first goal after twelve minutes, and the hat-trick was complete after 64 minutes.


28 1925-26

24 May 1926, 5-3 vs. Belgium, Olympish Stadion, Antwerpen
The first England hat-trick in over fourteen years is scored by 29 year-old Frank Osborne on his fourth and final appearance. The first came after fifteen minutes, the last after 86.


29 & 30 1926-27

11 May 1927, 9-1 vs. Belgium, Oscar Bossaert Stadion, Bruxelles
20 year-old (& 109 days) Billy Dean on his third appearance scores three goals and becomes the youngest to do so. The first after 36 minutes, his third on seventy minutes.
21 May 1927, 5-2 vs. Luxembourg, Stade de la Frontière, Esch-sur-Alzette
Billy Dean scores his second England hat-trick ten days after his first, between the 18th and 72nd minutes.


31 1928-29

11 May 1929, 5-1 vs. Belgium, Parc Duden, Bruxelles
26 year-old George Camsell scores four of England's five goals on his second appearance, and completed his hat-trick in five minutes, between the 32nd and 37th minute. The third being a penalty kick. His fourth goal came on the hour.


32 1929-30

20 November 1929, 6-0 vs. Wales, Stamford Bridge, Fulham
26 year-old George Camsell scores his second England hat-trick on his fourth appearance, between the 16th and 75th minutes.


33 & 34 1936-37

2 December 1936, 6-2 vs. Hungary, Arsenal Stadium, Highbury
24 year-old Ted Drake scores three goals between the 35th and 65th minutes on his fourth appearance.
17 May 1937, 4-0 vs. Sweden

21 year-old Freddie Steele (party number 16) completed his hat-trick in the 33rd minute before spending the rest of his fifth appearance with a heavily bandaged knee. He became the first England player to score a hattrick wearing a numbered shirt.

28 year-old debutant George Mills (9) is the first number nine to score a hattrick, completed in 45 minutes, starting after the tenth.

22 year-old Stan Matthews (7) dazzled the crowds on his sixth appearance with a hat-trick, completed five minutes before the close of play

37 1938-39

16 November 1938, 7-0 vs. Ireland, Old Trafford, Manchester
Although no one knew of the atrocities that were about to happen, the final pre-war brace was scored by the 26 year-old Willie Hall (8) in three minutes on his seventh appearance. He went on to score five of the seven goals

The Fifty-Four Post-War Hat-tricks Scored by England

38-41 1-4 1946-47           

28 September 1946, 7-2 vs. Ireland, Windsor Park, Belfast
28 year-old debutant Wilf Mannion (10) scored his, and England's, first post-war hat-trick in 54 minutes either side of half-time.
27 November 1946, 8-2 vs. Netherlands, Leeds Road, Huddersfield
27 year-old Tommy Lawton (9) scored the first three of his four goals in thirteen first half minutes, with his fourth goal on his twelfth appearance coming twelve minutes before the end.
(2) 25 May 1947, 10-0 vs. Portugal,
Estadio Nacional, Lisboa
Not since June 1908 have two hattircks featured in a single match.
Tommy Lawton (9) completed the first hat-trick of the day, his second for England, seven minutes before half time. He had scored his first seventeen seconds into sixteenth appearance. He then scored a fourth goal.
Then debutant, the twelfth so far, Stan Mortensen (8) completed his hattrick after 71 minutes, adding a fourth goal. All a day before his 26th birthday.


42 5 1947-48           

19 November 1947, 4-2 vs. Sweden, Arsenal Stadium, Highbury
26 year-old Stan Mortensen (8), on his fifth appearance, completed his hattrick two minutes from time, winning the match for his country.


43 6 1948-49           

9 October 1948, 6-2 vs. Ireland, Windsor Park, Belfast
27 year-old Stan Mortensen (8), on his eighth appearance, completed his third hattrick with a header in 22 second half minutes.


44-46 7-9 1949-50           

15 October 1949, 4-1 vs. Wales, Ninian Park, Cardiff
25 year-old Jackie Milburn (9) scored three goals for the first ever England hattrick in World Cup qualification, as well as the 25th in British Championship competition. His three goals included two headers was completed in 48 minutes on his fifth appearance.
16 November 1949, 9-2 vs. Ireland, Maine Road, Manchester
31 year-old (& 40 days) Jack Rowley (9) became he oldest when he began England's rout after five minutes and he added his second, England's fifth, with his head, seconds into the second half. He completed the 19th hat-trick scored against Ireland eleven minutes later and a fourth minutes later, all on his fourth appearance.
14 May 1950, 5-3 vs. Portugal,

28 year-old Tom Finney (11) completed his hattrick in fifty minutes, before adding a fourth on his 24th appearance were from the penalty spot, making him the most experienced player to score a hat-trick.


47 & 48 10 & 11 1954-55           

10 November 1954, 3-2 vs. Wales, Empire Stadium, Wembley
Wembley Stadium witnessed its first hattrick beneath its twin towers, when thirty year-old (& 177 days) Roy Bentley (8) on his ninth appearance, scored two headers and a left-footed jab in twelve second half minutes. It is the first time where the hat-trick has solely been responsible for the England victory.
2 April 1955, 7-2 vs. Scotland, Empire Stadium, Wembley
29 year-old Dennis Wilshaw (10) was making his fourth appearance and scored after forty-five seconds, but he never scored again until the seventieth minute and completed his hat-trick six minutes after that. Going on to score a fourth.


49 & 50 12 & 13 1956-57           

5 December 1956, 5-2 vs. Denmark, Molineux, Wolverhampton
24 year-old Tommy Taylor (9) scored the first three of England's five goals on his thirteenth appearance. His hattrick was complete shortly after the start of the second half.
8 May 1957, 5-1 vs. Republic of Ireland, Empire Stadium, Wembley
Now 25 years old, Tommy Taylor (9) scores his second England hat-trick when again scored three of England's five goals, all in 31 first half minutes. He is the first to score in consecutive matches since Bill Dean in May 1927.


51 & 52 14 & 15 1958-59           

22 October 1958, 5-0 vs. USSR, Empire Stadium, Wembley
24 year-old Johnny Haynes (10) scored his only England hattrick on his 26th appearance between the half-time whistle and the eightieth minute.
28 May 1959, 8-1 vs. United States, Wrigley Field, Los Angeles
The 21 year-old
Bobby Charlton (11) scores his first England hat-trick in 21 minutes of his twelfth appearance. He completed his hattrick, which included his second penalty-kick, five minutes from the end.


53-56 16-19 1960-61           

(2) 19 October 1960, 9-0 vs. Luxembourg, Stade Municipal, Stad Lëtzebuerg
Bobby Charlton (11) scores his second England hat-trick a week after his 23rd birthday, and he completed the first hattrick of the night on his twentieth appearance, quickly followed by
the 20 year-old (& 242 days) Jimmy Greaves (8) who scored the second hat-trick of the match and becomes the youngest to do so at the same time, on his ninth appearance.
15 April 1961, 9-3 vs. Scotland, Empire Stadium, Wembley
Jimmy Greaves (8), now a 21 year-old playing in his twelfth match, scores his second England hat-trick in 62 minutes, completed eight minutes from the end.
10 May 1961, 8-0 vs. Mexico, Empire Stadium, Wembley
Bobby Charlton (11), on his 24th appearance, scores his third England hat-trick, completed in an hour, from the twelfth minute, and the fourth hat-trick in a season, the most since the four scored during 1946-47.

20 May 1962, 4-0 vs. Peru, Éstadio Nacional, Lima
22 year-old Jimmy Greaves (8) scores three of England's four goals - his third hat-trick - in the first half of his 18th appearance.


58 21 1962-63           

5 June 1963, 8-1 vs. Switzerland, Sankt-Jakob Stadium, Basel
25 year-old Bobby Charlton (11) scores a record-equalling fourth hat-trick on his 45th appearance in an England shirt, making him the most experienced goalscorer to score an England hat-trick, taking just over an hour to complete. It also mades him England's equal top scorer.


59-63 22-26 1963-64           

(2) 20 November 1963, 8-3 vs. Northern Ireland, Empire Stadium, Wembley
23 year-old Jimmy Greaves (8) scores his record-equalling fourth England hat-trick in forty minutes on his 33rd appearance, he added a fourth goal five minutes later.
24 year-old Terry Paine (7) scored a second hat-trick of the day on his fifth appearance. He began his rout 18 minutes before Greaves scored his first, but completed his hattrick a minute after Greaves had completed his.
17 May 1964, 4-3 vs. Portugal, Estadio Nacional, Lisboa
24 year-old John Byrne (9) completes his only hattrick in 69 minutes, and two minutes before the end of his fifth appearance.
(2) 27 May 1964, 10-0 vs. United States, Downing Stadium, New York City
25 year-old Roger Hunt (8) completed his hattrick, England's sixtieth, in 48 minutes before adding a fourth twelve minutes later on his fourth appearance, to be added on ten minutes later by
the debuting 23 year-old centre forward Fred Pickering (9), who completed his hattrick in 69 minutes, and ensuring that for the eighth and so far, final time, a second hat-trick in a single match, and the only time two double hattricks have been scored in a single season.

3 October 1964, 4-3 vs. Northern Ireland, Windsor Park, Belfast
24 year-old Jimmy Greaves (8) scores his record breaking fifth England hat-trick in fifteen minutes on his fortieth appearance, which also placed him on top of the England goalscoring charts.


65 28 1965-66           

29 June 1966, 6-1 vs. Norway, Ullevål Stadion, Oslo
Already with the numerous hattrick records in his possession, the 26 year-old Jimmy Greaves
(8) scores a sixth England hat-trick in 24 first half minutes on his 49th appearance, making him now the most experienced player to score three goals. He added a fourth goal sixteen minutes from the end, keeping him firmly perched on top of the England goalscoring charts.

66 29 1966 World Cup Finals

24 year-old Geoff Hurst
(10) making only his eighth appearance for England, began what is probably the most famous England hattrick ever with a header in the nineteenth minute and ended 101 minutes later with the most famous words in football commentary..."They think it's all over. IT IS NOW!"

67 30 1968-69

27 year-old Geoff Hurst
(10) scored his second England hat-trick on his 25th appearance at the scene of his first. His 32 minute second half hattrick included two penalty kicks, the hattrick witnessed by the twin towers of Wembley.


68 31 1974-75           

16 April 1975, 5-0 vs. Cyprus, Wembley Stadium, Wembley
25 year-old Malcolm Macdonald (9) completed his hattrick in 49 minutes of his ninth appearance, before going on to score twice more. The only hattrick scored in the dark ages of the 1970's.


69 32 1982-83           

15 December 1982, 9-0 vs. Luxembourg, Wembley Stadium, Wembley
The first hattrick in 7½ years is scored by 24 year-old Luther Blissett (10) on his first start for his country. His hattrick came in 42 minutes either side of half time of his second appearance, thus becoming not only the first BME player to score, but to also score a hattrick.

27 year-old captain Bryan Robson (7), making his 39th appearance scores his hattrick in 46 minutes either side of half-time. He is the third captain to achieve the feat, the sixth overall.

24 year-old Gary Lineker (10) completes his first hattrick in 37 minutes, on his ninth appearance, against the same opponent in the same qualifying group.

72 35 1986 World Cup Finals           
11 June 1986, 3-0 vs. Poland, Estadio Technologico, Monterrey
25 years old Gary Lineker
(10) scored his hattrick in 28 minute first half hattrick of his sixteenth appearance, before becoming the first hattrick goalscorer to be replaced. It is the second hattrick in Tournament play. It is the second match to have a hattrick solely responsible for the result.

Gary Lineker (10) completes his third hattrick, his quickest yet, in 22 minutes, on his 21st appearance. It is the first hattrick in a friendly fixture for eighteen years. He added a fourth just before the hour. He became the first foreign-based player to score a hattrick.

The third hattrick against Turkey is the fourth by
Gary Lineker (10) in 63 minutes, on his 26th appearance. It means Lineker is the quickest post-war goalscorer to reach four hattricks.

12 June 1991, 4-2 vs. Malaysia, Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur
Returning from a Spurs Exhibition match, 30 year-old (& 194 days)
Gary Lineker (10) scores a record-equalling fifth hattrick in 29 first half minutes. The perfect hattrick as he scored with his left foot, his right foot, then his head. He became the second oldest to score a hattrick on his 68th appearance, making him the most experienced player to score a hattrick, as well as the fourth captain - eighth occasion overall. He added a fourth goal with his head after seventy minutes.

17 February 1993, 6-0 vs. San Marino, Wembley Stadium, Wembley
26 year-old captain
David Platt (7) becomes the first player to score a hattrick on the occasion of his first captaincy. It happened in 54 minutes on his 36th appearance. He added a fourth goal seven minutes from the end. He could have added a fifth late on - but he missed his penalty kick. The second foreign-based player to score a hattrick.


77 40 1993-94           

17 November 1993, 7-1 vs. San Marino, Stadio Renato Dall' Ara, Bologna
30 year-old (& 350 days) Ian Wright (8) becomes the fourth oldest player to score a hattrick, and the second BME player to do so and subjected San Marino to a second hattrick in the same qualification campaign, the second time England have achieved this feat. He went on to add a fourth.

27 March 1999, 3-0 vs. Poland, Wembley Stadium, Wembley

Paul Scholes (8) scores a hattrick in an hour on his sixteenth appearance and Kevin Keegan's first match, and it is the third time a hattrick has been solely responsible for England's result. Scholes also becomes the second player to score a hattrick and then to be replaced, and the first to receive a caution during his three goal tally.

Michael Owen (10) scores his first hattrick in 54 minutes, on his 31st appearance. The first 21 year-old to score a hattrick since 1961.

Not since December 1956 has a home hattrick been scored away from Wembley. 25 year-old Peter Crouch (9), making his seventh appearance, scores his only hattrick in an hour, completing his set in the last minute. Certainly the tallest player to score an England hattrick.

Taking off a year and a half from the 125 year-old record
Theo Walcott (7) becomes the youngest player to score an England hattrick, and so far, the only teenager to achieve the feat. His first three goals for his country, at 19 years (&177 days), making his fourth appearance, scores his only hattrick in a 56 minutes, completing his tally with eight minutes remaining, being replaced three minutes later - the fourth player to do so. The third BME hatrician.

Jermain Defoe (9) becomes the first player to score an England hattrick at the new National Stadium, and the fourth BME hatrician in the process. His only hattrick, on his 44th appearance, took 83 minutes, and probably the longest since the 1966 World Cup Final, and still had time to be replaced four minutes later - the fifth player to score a hattrick and be substituted.

The 24 year-old Captain Harry Kane (9) scored his first England hattrick on his 26th appearance. His hattrick, including two penalty-kicks, was completed in forty minutes. He was replaced a minute after, making him the sixth player to be substituted after scoring a hattrick. Kane is also the seventh different captain to score a hattrick, on the eleventh occasion a captain has scored a hattrick.

24 year-old Raheem Sterling's (11) 44 minute England hattrick is only the second at the new National Stadium, and he becomes the fifth BME hatrician. His only hattrick, on his 48th appearance, was complete by the 68th minute, and he was replaced two minutes later - thus becoming the seventh player to score a hattrick and be substituted.

The 26 year-old captain Harry Kane (9) celebrated his fortieth appearance with a tap-in and two penalty kicks across 49 minutes. He was then replaced four minutes later, the eighth to be substituted. It is also the twelfth hattrick scored by an England captain. The third hattrick at this Stadium is the twentieth overall

For the first time since 1965-66, a second hattrick in the same season was scored. Captain
Harry Kane (9) scored his third hat-trick for England, taking just nineteen first half minutes to complete in his 44th appearance, all from the six-yard area and two of them headers. It is the first in two consecutive Wembley internationals. The thirteenth hattrick by a captain, and the ninth time the scorer has been substituted.

28-year-old captain Harry Kane (9) scored his fourth hat-trick for England, taking 27 first half minutes on his 66th appearance. The first with his head, the second with his left foot, and the third coming from the right foot of an acrobatic scissor kick. The fourteenth hattrick by a captain, and the tenth time the scorer has been substituted.
15 November 2021, 10-0 vs. San Marino, San Marino Stadium, Serravalle
Harry Kane (9) scored his fifth hat-trick for England, taking twelve first half minutes on his 67th appearance, two of which were penalty-kicks. The fifteenth hattrick by a captain, and the eleventh time the scorer has been substituted. He had scored a fourth three minutes later.

21 year-old Bukayo Saka (7)'s first England (and professional) hattrick is only the second at Old Trafford, and he becomes the sixth BME hatrician. His only hattrick, on his 28th appearance, was complete in thirteen minutes either side of of half-time, and he was replaced nine minutes later - thus becoming the twelfth player to score a hattrick and be substituted.
