Before the England senior team played at their new home, the Under-21 side met its Italian equivalent on 24 March 2007, ending 3-3 with David Bentley getting the very first England goal in front of a 55,700 crowd. A month later, the Under-16 side then beat the Spanish Under-16's on 28 April 2007 with a single goal in front of 28,210.

The England Under 21 side returned to the National Stadium on 5 September 2008. Stuart Pearce's side played Portugal's Under-21 team in the UEFA Under-21 European Championship Group 3 match. A 20,000 crowd witnessed a James Milner penalty and a Gabby Agbonlahor goal as England ran out two-nil victors in a side that also included Joe Hart in goal, Tom Huddlestone and Adam Johnson.
