This table contains the World Cup final tournament records of the 193 players who have been named to England's World Cup squads, from the first in 1950 to the last in 2006.  Only 149 of them actually played in World Cup finals matches.  Another 44 were named to a squad but did not play.  Seven players--Viv Anderson, George Eastham, Alan Hodgkinson, David James, Martin Keown, Nigel Martyn and Chris Woods--were named to two squads but never played.

Two players from England's World Cup 2006 squad have jumped into the top 20 on the England all-time World Cup appearances list:  Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole

*Only 17 of the 22 official squad members actually travelled to Switzerland for the 1954 tournament.  Five players--Ken Armstrong, Allenby Chilton, Johnny Haynes, Harry Hooper and Bedford Jezzard--were put on reserve status and remained at home awaiting a call if the need arose.  It did not.

**Some sources state that England took only 20 squad members to the 1958 tournament in Sweden, and their squad lists do not include Alan Hodgkinson or Maurice Setters.  Other sources, including FIFA's official World Cup records, list 22 players on the squad and include both Hodgkinson and Setters.  The likelihood is that these two players were included on the squad list submitted to FIFA but did not travel to the tournament.  

***Some sources state that only 20 of the 22 squad members travelled to the 1962 tournament in Chile, that Gordon Banks and Derek Kevan were stay-at-home reserves who were never called and that Jimmy Adamson made the trip only as a coach.  Other sources, including FIFA's official World Cup records, include Kevan and Adamson on the squad, but not Banks.  Since official squad lists had to be submitted to FIFA, our squad list defers to the official FIFA records, omitting Banks and including Adamson.  We do not doubt that Kevan remained on reserve at home.

****Steven G. Gerrard was named to the World Cup 2002 squad and Daniel Murphy was placed on standby.  Gerrard withdrew because of injury before the tournament began, Murphy was called to the squad and Trevor L. Sinclair was put on standby.  Murphy, too, withdrew due to injury before the tournament began, and Sinclair was called to the squad.

*****Robert P. Green was named in the World Cup 2006 squad, but withdrew following an injury in a warm-up B international.  Scott Carson was called up as a replacement.
