Club Career

Club(s) Represented Lowestoft Schools and Suffolk Schools, as well as having trials for England Schoolboy's. He joined Ipswich Town FC in August 1976 after a three week trial, despite being offered terms by Norwich City FC. He made 271 league appearances, scoring sixteen goals. Ipswich were relegated at the end of the 1985-86 season and had decided to sell Butcher, so they could finalise payments on their new stand. Butcher wanted to go to Manchester United FC, where there was interest, Tottenham Hotspur FC also expressed a desire, but he was to become part of Graeme Souness' Glasgow Rangers FC English revolution when he paid £725,000 on 1 August 1986, a record fee received for Ipswich, as the club captain. He made 127 SPL appearances, scoring nine goals. Leeds United AFC failed in a bid to bring him back south of the border, but the lure of management was strong, as Butcher was appointed as player-manager of Coventry City FC on 15 November 1990. He made six league appearances until he was sacked in January 1992. But in a bid to keep himself fit, he trained with Trevor Francis' Sheffield Wednesday FC, even playing a couple of reseve matches. He then joined Sunderland AFC in August 1992, becoming the club's player-manager from 1 February 1993. He made 38 league appearances before being retiring from playing at the season. He made a final three Scottish League appearances for Clydebank FC in November 1993.

Management Career

Club(s) After retiring from playing, Butcher continued as manager of Coventry City FC until he was sacked on 6 January 1992. Appointed player-manager of Sunderland AFC in 1 February 1993, again being sacked on 26 November 1993.  Butcher did not return to coaching until the summer of 1997. Raith Rovers FC hired Butcher as a youth coach and then a reserve team coach. In August 1998, Butcher joined Dundee United FC as a youth-team coach, but was released in early 2000. On 16 October 2001, he was appointed assistant manager at Motherwell FC, appointed manager in December 2002. He was appointed manager of Australian side Sydney FC on 17 May 2006, and sacked on 7 February 2007. On 30 March 2007, Butcher returned to Scotland to become the assistant manager of Partick Thistle FC, only to be appointed the next manager of Brentford AFC on 24 April 2007, effective on 7 May. He left by 'mutual consent' on 10 December 2007.  Butcher was then appointed as Craig Burley's assistant during Scotland's 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign. During which, he was appointed manager of Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC on 27 January 2009. After Scotland's failure to qualify in November 2009, Burley was sacked and Butcher left with consent.  Butcher turned down the opportuinty to manage Barnsley FC in January 2013, prefering to stay with ICT.

Entered into management, more successfully in Scotland than he was in England. Also has a fair bit to say on the current England team. Continues to summarise for the BBC on radio and televison and Channel 5. Inbetween his managements between England and Scotland, he ran a hotel business, as well as failed internet ventures.
