Club Career

Club(s) Was part of the famed youth academy at Manchester United FC before signing as a professional on 29 January 1993. He would go onto 270 Premiership appearances, scoring 21 goals, before leaving United for Newcastle United FC on 30 July 2004 for £2.5 million. He had turned down Birmingham City FC six months previously. He did however spend time on loan at Birmingham City FC when he signed on 4 August 2005, he scored three goals in 25 Premiership appearances. He completed 134 league appearances with Newcastle, scoring five times. He was made club captain in his final season at St James' Park, the 2009-10 season. Butt moved to China when South China AA signed him on 22 November 2010. He returned to England and retired in May 2011.
