Grew up in Salisbury Avenue, Barking and attended Ripple Infants School and Illford High School.
Married to Hilkka H. Helakorpi [registered in Havering, Essex, June 1970].
Height/Weight 6' 0½", 13st. 8lbs [1978].

Club Career

Club(s) Started his early career with Ilford Schools and Essex Schools, as well as London Schools. Signed apprenticeship forms with West Ham United FC on 24 July 1965, despite being offered terms by both Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC. But West Ham allowed him to finish his schooling to gain his eleven O-levels and two A-levels. He turned professional in May 1966. This despite Brian Clough offering West Ham £400,000 to take both Moore and Trevor Brooking to Nottingham Forest FC in July 1973. Brooking went on to play 528 league appearances and scored 88 goals. He made two appearances for Cork City FC in 1985 and another for Newcastle Blue Star FC.

Management Career

Club(s) Took charge of West Ham United FC on a caretaker basis twice in 2003. On 24 April 2003, Hammers manager took ill and Brooking took over for the final three matches of the season, despite being unbeaten, West Ham were relegated and Roeder was reinstated through the summer. However, Roeder was sacked and Brooking was in for a second stint that lasted eleven games until Alan Pardew was appointed. Brooking's fourteen matches took in nine wins, three draws and only one loss.

Beyond England

In 1970, along with Colin McGowan, Brooking started a binding company Colbrook Plastics Limited, supplying book-binding and print finishing situated in Stratford, East London.
In 1984, Brooking joined the BBC as a pundit and co-commentator on radio and television.
He was chairman of the Eastern Region Council for Sport and Recreation from 1987 until 1997. He became a member and vice-chair of the then Great Britain Sports Council. Subsequently, in 1999 he was appointed chairman of Sport England, which is responsible for developing and maintaining the infrastructure of sport in England and has responsibility for distributing National Lottery funds. Took over as caretaker manager of West Ham United FC on 24 April 2003. In June 2004, the Football Association appointed him as the Director of Football Development, taking over as the Director of Football in February 2006.
