Due to the fact that
many matches rarely stuck to exactly ninety minutes long, allowing time
for injuries, errors and substitutions. The minutes here
given can only ever be a guideline and cannot therefore be accurate, only
an approximation. |

Notes
Darren Anderton progressed
through the Pompey youth team to become a superstar almost overnight. His silky
skills on the right wing grew from schoolboy level to first team FA Cup
semi-final stature in just three years. Then £2m offered by Tottenham Hotspur in
the summer of 1992 was just too tempting - and Anderton left Fratton Park for
White Hart Lane.
Anderton was born in Southampton in
March 1972 but no-one at his hometown club took any interest in him until Dave
Hurst, Pompey's youth development officer, saw something in the leggy,
frail-looking teenager. Alan Ball gave Darren an apprenticeship at Fratton Park,
where he grew stronger playing in Pompey's youth team alongside future stars
Andy Awford and Darryl Powell. Early recognition came to Darren when, at 18, he
scored at Anfield in an FA Youth Cup match against Liverpool which ended 2-2.
And the 6ft 1in youngster curled a superb 20-yard free-kick high into the net in
the replay at Fratton Park to set Pompey on their way to a 2-1 extra-time
victory. His first team debut came against Cardiff in the second round of the
Rumbelows Cup in October 1990 as a substitute for his youth team colleague
Powell.
Less than a month later he made his
full league debut against Wolves in a 0-0 draw at Fratton Park and he went on to
make 20 appearances in the 1990-91 season. His promising talent earned him a
regular place in the first team from the start of the next campaign and he
obliged with his first goal for Pompey in the season opener at Blackburn. His
second goal came just over a week later at Gillingham in the Rumbelows Cup and,
as the season progressed, so did Anderton. His pace, skill, and exciting running
at opponents made scouts and national newspapers sit up and take notice.
A fourth-round FA Cup tie at Fratton
Park against Leyton Orient brought any doubters to finally accept that
Anderton's talent was exceptional. He scored two memorable goals as Pompey's 2-0
victory was seen by millions of Match of the Day viewers. Pompey were now into
their famous run to the cup semi-finals. But Anderton's stunning strike in the
first match against Liverpool - a 1-1 draw at Highbury - proved to be the last
goal he scored for the club. Spurs scout Bill Nicholson had, like many others,
decided that Anderton was ready for the Premiership and that summer he moved to
the North London club. The gangling youngster dubbed Shaggy by team-mates had
hit the big time in a little under three years. - Portsmouth.co.uk
