The opponent's name in capitalised red lettering below the emblem and the date in red below the opponent's name (e.g. 2 JUNE 2018). Remaining third comprises a black Swoosh, with a black line underneath, followed by 2018 in black below, all on a silver background of interlocking diamond shapes. DRI-FIT in capitalised silver lettering on right hip.

Navy blue shorts. Red number on left thigh, in same font as on shirt, with royal blue Swoosh underneath. Royal blue emblem on right thigh.

White socks with a pure platinum Swoosh on shin.

In the first three friendly fixtures, England's captains wore a blue armband featuring a white C. Against Panama, Harry Kane wore a blue armband featuring the LIVING FOOTBALL FIFA logo, whilst in the other two World Cup matches, the captain wore a green armband also featuring the LIVING FOOTBALL FIFA logo. A blue armband featuring the UEFA RESPECT logo was worn for the first two and last two games of the 2018-19 season and the first five games of the 2019-20 season in which the shirt was worn, and the same logo (worn by Kane) featured on a green armband in the games in Croatia and Montenegro. The NO TO RACISM and UEFA RESPECT logos were worn by Kane on a green armband for the remaining Nations League group games, against Spain and Croatia, and against Czech Republic at Wembley, whilst against USA, Fabian Delph wore a yellow armband featuring a black C.

Variations
  • The names of England's opponents, as they appeared beneath the emblem, were BELGIUM, BULGARIA, CROATIA, CZECH REPUBLIC, HOLLAND, ITALY, KOSOVO, MONTENEGRO, NIGERIA, PANAMA, SPAIN and SWITZERLAND.

Most Appearances

17 - Harry Kane (2 sub), Harry Maguire (2 sub), Marcus Rashford (7 sub)

  • Maguire spent the most time on the pitch.

  • Following a two-year absence, Wayne Rooney returned to make his 120th and last appearance, against the United States, a new record for an outfield player.

  • 16 other players made their last international appearance in this shirt, including Gary Cahill's 61st and Danny Welbeck's 42nd.

  • Nine players won their first international cap wearing this shirt.

Top Scorers

16 - Harry Kane (6 pens.)

8 - Raheem Sterling

6 - Marcus Rashford (1 pen.)

  • Ten players scored their first international goal in this shirt. Jesse Lingard had taken his tally to six by 2021.

  • Five players scored their first and only international goal in this shirt. Kieran Trippier's made him only the second England player to score in a World Cup semi-final (after Sir Bobby Charlton).

Captains

15 - Harry Kane

3 - Eric Dier

1 - Fabian Delph, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling

  • On his only appearance as skipper, Delph handed over the armband to Wayne Rooney for his final substitute appearance, against the United States.

  • After starting as captain for the first time, on his fiftieth appearance, in the Nations League semi-final against Netherlands, Sterling handed over the armband to Kane at half-time as the regular skipper came on as a substitute.

England's kits for the 2018 World Cup were an obvious move to a more traditional look. In fact, the main criticism was that they looked like every other England kit, albeit with the latest Nike technological innovations. The previous kits were criticised for being too radical, which just goes to show that you can't please everybody.

Amongst the latest innovations were player numbers backed by anti-cling nodes to stop the shirt sticking to the back during extreme heat and positioned in a more "breathable" zone on the front of the shirt (the right breast). Umbro had previously placed mesh numbers on the right breast in 2006 to the same effect.

The England C team was the first to wear the kit, in a 3-2 win against Wales at Barry, three nights before the full international team got to wear it.

This kit coincided with a long-overdue renaissance period for England's fortunes under the managership of Gareth Southgate, who took them to two consecutive semi-final appearances. The World Cup in Russia saw them reach the last four for the first time in 28 years and the good form continued into the new UEFA Nations League, where victories against Spain and their World Cup conquerors, Croatia propelled them to the semi-finals in Portugal. Once there, however, key players were rested due to their club exertions in the Champions League Final and England were further hampered with defensive errors that led to a disappointing exit to the Netherlands.

Nevertheless, hopes were high that the following European Championship would continue the upward trend, especially with a significant home advantage in the finals.

Photos above right are of Harry Kane's shirt for the game against Belgium and now part of Richard Clarke's 'Three Lions - England Match Worn Shirts' Facebook Collection.
