Club Career

Club(s) Began his playing career as a schoolboy in Leicester, representing West Leicester Schoolboys, and Leicester City schools, as well as playing for a junior club he help set up, Blaby Boys Club. After making a name for himself with Leicester Boys and becoming a regular with England schools, both Manchester United FC and Arsenal FC were keen to sign Shilton, but his heart and loyalty was with Leicester City FC, whom he signed apprenticeship forms with in June 1965, and then professional forms in September 1966, having made his debut as a sixteen year old in the spring. Matt Busby again, attempted to sign Shilton during a match in September 1967, and West Bromwich Albion made a 100,000 pound bid for him in 1969. Then Brian Clough's Derby County made a 200,000 pound bid in June 1971, again turned down, followed by bids from Everton FC and Arsenal FC. In summer 1974, following 286 league appearances and a single goal, Shilton declined a new contract, and Manchester United FC and Arsenal FC were unwilling to match the excessive asking price, it was left to Derby County FC and Stoke City FC to sign Shilton, for whichever club he chose, and it was City that signed the keeper in November 1974 for a 325,000 pound transfer fee. At the end of June 1977, Manchester United FC were again in the hunt for Shilton, but Tommy Docherty's sacking prevented that move from materialising. After 110 league appearances, it was Brian Clough who finally took him to Nottingham Forest in September 1977 for 270,000 pound. His successful period included 202 league appearances. Pastures new awaited when Lawrie McMenemy's Southampton FC paid 300,000 pounds for the shotstopper in August 1982. When McMenemy left for Sunderland AFC in June 1985, he attempted to take Shilton with him, but he remained to complete 188 league outings. So, wanting a fresh challenge, Derby County FC, in June 1987, paid 345,000 pounds for his services. Following their relegation from the top division, in 1991, Shilton was offered the managerial position at Hull City AFC. However, a year later, so did Plymouth Argyle FC, and this time, Shilton accepted. After his sacking, and 34 league appearances, Shilton was picked up by Wimbledon FC, as cover, and never made it past the substitutes bench at Anfield. A watching Bruce Rioch, manager at Bolton Wanderers FC came calling a few days later, and for the last couple months of the 1994-95 season, Shilton helped them win promotion to the Premier League via the play-off route, he made just one league appearance. He signed for Ron Atkinson's Coventry City FC and then Harry Redknapp's West Ham United FC, but again, at both clubs, never made it off the substitutes bench. The following season, as he was about to turn 47, Shilton signed for Leyton Orient FC, he made his 1000th league appearance against Brighton & Hove Albion FC on 22 December 1996, keeping a clean sheet. With the Brisbane Road club, he made nine league appearances, taking his grand total to 1005 league appearances, 32 years after signing with Leicester City FC, he retired from playing in January 1997.

Managerial Career

Club(s) Following his retirement from international football, Graham Taylor employed Shilton as England's goalkeeping coach. The position only lasted seven months. After turning down the vacant managerial post at Hull City FC, he did accept the player-manager post at Plymouth Argyle FC in 1992, he was sacked in 1995.
