This was England's first defeat by Northern Ireland since 1957. Terry Neill,
the Irish player-manager winning his fiftieth cap, scored the only goal of
the match from close range following a Danny Hegan corner in the
thirty-third minute. Colin Bell skippered England in the absence of
injured Bobby Moore, and Tony Currie and Colin Todd won their first caps.
It was the first match since the 1966 World Cup that England kicked off
without one of the heroes of '66 in the starting line-up. |
