Birth 11 October 1937 at 17 Laburnum Terrace, Ashington, Northumberland [registered in Northumberland Central, December 1937]. To Robert and Elizabeth Ellen (née Milburn). His father was a colliery coal cutter. Attended Hirst Park Secondary Modern School and Bedlington Grammar School.

Notes

According to the Passenger Notes, Robert Charlton was one of many Manchester United footballers that arrived in New York on board the Queen Mary on 20 June 1960. His address was stated as 114 Beatrice Street in Ashington.

Marriage to Norma Ball in 1961 [no registration found]. Two daughters, Suzanne and Andrea
Death Saturday, 21 October 2023 in Macclesfield General Hospital, aged 86 years 10 days, following a fall at his care home, The Willows in Knutsford, a nursing home caring for patients with dementia.

Club(s) Began his career with East Northumberland Schools before joining Manchester United FC as an amateur on 1 January 1953, he joined the groundstaff on 6 June 1953 and signed professional forms on 4 October 1954.  In September 1968, signed a eight-year contract (a Football League record) but retired in April 1973 after 606 league appearances and 199 goals; Joined Preston North End FC in June 1973, playing in the 1974-75 season. Had a spell with Waterford United FC in Ireland in 1975-76 where he played 31 times, scoring 18; and then South Africa;
