3 Roy Hodgson was only appointed England manager on May 1 and his first task was to name his squad for the tournament. The provisional list of eight black players among the 23 was announced on May 16, including Glen Johnson, Ashley Cole, Theo Walcott, Ashley Young, Joleon Lescott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jermain Defoe and Danny Welbeck, prior to England's two warm-up fixtures. Daniel Sturridge was one of the five additional players who were placed on standby. 34.8% or one in three squad players were black.
