"The revival
of Youth Football for those between 16 and 18 years of age has been one
of the most important features in The Football Association's work since
the War. The 1947-48 season has seen two innovations. The first was the
International Youth Tournament played in England. There was also the
Youth International Championship between England, Scotland, Wales and
Ireland. The success of these competitions is unquestioned, and they are
likely to become a permanent feature in each year's fixtures. The
promise shown by many of the players and their general enthusiasm augurs

Matches were initially of eighty minutes' duration (two halves of forty minutes each), but it is likely that they switched to ninety minutes by, at least, 1952 in the Amateur Youth Championship, though not in the FIFA tournament.

| At just 14 years old, almost three years younger than most of his team-mates, and just five months after appearing for England schoolboys, Grenville Jones became England's youngest youth international, in their very first fixture. | The Football Association introduced a new competition in 1952, the FA Youth Cup. The FA County Youth Cup had been introduced just after the war for local football associations' representative teams, but in an effort to encourage more clubs to develop their own talented youngsters, rather than pay large transfer fees to other clubs for their more experienced players, the new competition was designed to allow teams to field both amateur and professional players aged between 15 and 18, the same criteria as for England's youth internationals, thus the only schoolboys included were those that had stayed in full-time education in the next academic year after reaching the statutory leaving age of 15. It was dominated in its first five seasons by Manchester United, where manager Matt Busby's commitment to youth football and proven success with his policy, earned his players the celebrated nickname of the 'Busby Babes'. |
