Following a
trial at Coventry City FC and a subsequent rejection, Keegan played his
football with the local Doncaster sides, including Peglar's Brass Works
Reserves, Elmfield House Youth Club and Lonsdale Hotel FC. It was from the
latter that Scunthorpe United FC became interested and signed him in
1968. A move followed to Liverpool FC for £33,000 on 10 May 1971, despite
an offer from Preston North End FC. Keegan went across to West Germany to
join SV Hamburger for £500,000 on 3 June 1977, a Bundesliga transfer record fee,
where he made ninety league appearances and scored 32 league goals. When
Keegan decided to leave Germany, Juventus FC made an attempt for his
signature, but his wife wanted a return to England, and so on 11 February
1980, Lawrie McMenemy announced that Southampton FC had clinched his
signature, effective 1
July 1980 for £400,000. Keegan dropped a
division and signed with Newcastle United FC on 19 August 1982 for
£100,000. Keegan announced his retirement on 14 February
1984, to take affect at the end of that season. |

Keegan's three-minute song "Head Over Heels in Love" [EMI
2965], was written and produced by Smokies' Chris Norman and Pete
Spencer. The single was released on 9 June 1979, and peaked at number 31
in the UK charts, having spent six weeks on the official UK single chart.
However, it did mange a more respectable number 10 in Germany where he was
based at the time. The single features another original song, "Move on
Down" as the B-side.
Keegan released a second single, "England", on
his return to England from Germany, but it failed to chart. |

Appointed
manager of Newcastle United FC on 5 February 1992, when United where
flirting with relegation from Division Two.
Nevertheless, he resigned after 38 days, only re-appointed after crisis
talks with United chairman, Sir John Hall. He was appointed
temporary manager
of the England U21 side on two occasions as
cover for Dave Sexton in October and November 1994. Keegan announced his resignation
from United again on 7 January 1997. He returned to football with Fulham FC on 25 September 1997, as Chief
Operating Officer, taking over the manager's role in May 1998. He took
over as the England national coach on 17 February 1999 on a part-time
basis, becoming full-time when he left Fulham FC in that May of 1999. He
resigned as England coach on 7 October 2000. It was not until 24 May 2001
that Keegan returned to management, as manager of newly-relegated
Manchester City FC, where he remained until announcing his retirement from
football on 10 March 2005. Regardless of intentions, Keegan turned
down Doncaster Rovers FC in September 2006, but returned to
St. James' Park on 16 January 2008 as a manager, by name only, which only
added to another resignation on 2 September 2008. |
