England Honours -
Knighthoods and Other Royal Honours

Honours Index

King George V created the honours known collectively as the Order of the British Empire in 1917 to recognise service or achievements outside wartime combat.  Ranks in the Order are Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GBE), Knight or Dame Commander (KBE or DBE), Commander (CBE), Officer (OBE) and Member (MBE).  The awards are announced twice annually--in the New Year's Honours List and in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in June.  The Queen chooses the recipients on the advice of the Prime Minister, to whom recommendations are sent either by government ministers or members of the public.

Our list of England national football team players and managers who have received these awards is incomplete except for those who were knighted.  If you have information on national team figures receiving the other royal honours for football or sporting services or achievements, please send it to us along with your source(s).  We thank the well-known football journalists Norman Giller, author of the Billy Wright biography reviewed elsewhere on this website plus more than 60 other football books, and Cris Freddi, author of the leading World Cup history, for consulting their records and filling in many gaps in our list.
