Against Sweden it was green, whilst in the other three games it was blue. Against Bulgaria, Kane wore a blue armband featuring the UEFA RESPECT logo.

  • Dele Alli wore his forename (DELE) on the back of his shirt.

  • In the first three World Cup fixtures in which they wore the red shirt, England wore an alternative pair of red shorts with white number on left thigh, in same font as on shirt, with pure platinum Swoosh underneath and pure platinum emblem with red background on right thigh.

This kit, like the white home kit, was launched on 7 February 2018, and also like the home kit, was rendered in a very traditional style.

The distinctive tonal stripes running across the shirt "evoke speed to reflect the youthful wave of talent that is taking over English football and culture" and it was the Under-21s that got to wear it first, in the successful (renamed) Toulon Tournament semi-final. Although the kit was launched with white shorts, it was an all-red ensemble that was worn in half of the six games, as England sought to comply with the stated FIFA request to wear a predominantly dark colour on one of their World Cup kits.

It provided a couple of historic moments for the national side, with a long-awaited penalty shootout victory against Colombia, followed by England's biggest-ever World Cup quarter-final victory, against Sweden. Though its final appearance was an emphatic six-goal despatch of Bulgaria, the red shirt was worn against the depressing backdrop of racist abuse in Sofia, sights and sounds that, it is to be hoped, are not to be repeated.
