Description
Two-toned blue short-sleeved, mega-blue-collared shirt, fastened with two sport-royal-blue buttons featuring WE ARE LIONS embossed in sport-royal-blue capitalised lettering around the top half of each button and WE ARE ENGLAND embossed in sport-royal-blue capitalised lettering around the bottom half. Abstract three-lions pattern in mega-blue and sport-royal-blue throughout, apart from the collar. Thick challenge-red stripe down each side, curving away from the seam, ending about half-way down, with a second, identical seam-stripe continuing in a line adjacent to the one above to produce a jagged effect. Challenge-red emblem on left breast, with a mega-blue background and a mega-blue star above the emblem. The opponent's name in capitalised white lettering below the emblem and the date in white below the opponent's name (e.g. 6 JUNE 2021). Mega-blue Swoosh on right breast with a challenge-red border and a white number, bordered in challenge red below it in a new font. White number on reverse in same font, but with a continuous mega-blue line running through it and a mega-blue emblem laid over the line at the base of each digit. Surname in capitalised white lettering above number on reverse in a different font and without a border. Rectangular black label on left hip with a white border. ENGINEERED in large white capitalised letters, occupying two-thirds of the upper left-hand side of the label and bordered in white. Remaining third comprises a white Swoosh. Two white lines underneath above a ten-character serial number in white. NIKE VAPORKNIT in capitalised white lettering on right hip.

Two-toned blue shorts with a curved thick challenge-red stripe down each side, getting wider towards the hem. Same abstract three-lions shadow pattern as on the shirt, throughout, apart from the mega-blue waistband. White number on left thigh, in same font as on shirt, with mega-blue Swoosh underneath, outlined in challenge red. Challenge-red emblem on right thigh, with a mega-blue background.

Mega blue socks with a thin challenge-red-and-sport-royal-blue hoop. ENG in stylised challenge-red lettering below it, with a challenge-red Swoosh below that. White stripes along the soles and sides of the feet, with LEFT (or RIGHT) | (abbreviation for size e.g. SM) in challenge-red capitalised lettering across the toes.

For the first seven games in which this shirt was worn, England's captains wore a light-green armband. It featured the UEFA RESPECT logo for the first two games, and then, for the next five games, the captain wore a black C. Against Switzerland, Harry Kane wore a blue and yellow armband, the colours of the Ukrainian flag, in support of the country following its invasion by Russia, and Kane wore CAPTAIN in black on a rainbow-coloured armband against Germany.

Variations
  • The names of England's opponents, as they appeared beneath the emblem, were ALBANIA, DENMARK, GERMANY, HUNGARY, POLAND, REPUBLIC OF IRELAND, ROMANIA, SAN MARINO and SWITZERLAND.

  • For the Nations League games in 2020, England wore the competition logo on the right sleeve and the UEFA RESPECT logo on the left sleeve.

  • For the World Cup qualification matches, England had the FIFA WORLD CUP Qatar 2022 Qualifiers logo on the right sleeve, and the European Qualifiers and UEFA RESPECT logos on the left sleeve.

  • Against Switzerland, England wore the Alzheimer's Society logo on the right sleeve, and the players did not wear names on the back of their shirts in the second half. This was a gesture highlighting a common symptom of the disease, that of forgetting the names of people.

  • For the Nations League games in 2022, England wore the competition logo on the right sleeve and the 'UEFA FOUNDATION for children' logo on the left sleeve.

Most Appearances

6 - Jack Grealish (3 sub), Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips

  • Of the three, Phillips spent the longest time on the pitch.

  • Six players made their international debut in this kit, including seventeen-year-old, Jude Bellingham, and Ollie Watkins, who made a scoring debut.

Top Scorers 7 - Harry Kane (2 pens)
3 - Dominic Calvert-Lewin (1 pen), Harry Maguire
Captains

6 - Harry Kane

1 - Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling

  • Maguire captained England for the first time, against the Republic of Ireland, after being sent off in the previous game, against Denmark.

  • Rashford captained England for the first time, against Romania, and scored the only goal of the game, from the penalty spot.

England's away kit, originally due to be released for the 2020 European Championship, had to wait until the following season for its first airing, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The style of shirt was similar to the 150-years celebration red shirt that was the first away kit produced for England by Nike in 2013, but this one stood out, not only because of the stylish abstract pattern adorning both the shirt and shorts, but also the fact that it was in blue, or more accurately, two different shades of blue. Other shades had been used in the past, both darker and lighter blues, but the overall effect had not really been seen in an England international since the royal-blue shirt of 1959 on an ill-fated trip to Peru. This one was destined for better fortunes, although its first appearance was the occasion of a nightmare performance against Denmark at Wembley.

Just as they had done with the new white kit, the Under-21s got to wear the second choice before the seniors did, in a European Championship qualifier in Austria.
