Notes

Tuesday, 15 August 2006 - Dean Ashton is out of England's friendly after suffering an ankle injury during training.  John Terry took part in training for the first time since being named captain but 22-year-old Ashton's withdrawal clouded the session.  Steve McClaren said: "It's disappointing when a young player is given his chance and gets injured.  Dean is having a scan at the hospital and we're awaiting the outcome."  McClaren had based part of his training around the West Ham forward but the injury suffered half way through training on Tuesday has forced the England coach into a rethink.  "We did some with work on Dean on Monday and were going to do some more this morning, but these things happen in football.  We are just very sorry to see this happen."

Friday, 11 August 2006 - Steve McClaren picks his first 25-man England squad.  He also announces former coach Terry Venables as his assistant manager.  West Ham striker Dean Ashton has received his first England call-up.  David Beckham is dropped while Wayne Rooney, who is suspended for the first two Euro 2008 qualifiers, is rested.  Sol Campbell and David James have been also been left out, but Jermain Defoe, Phil Neville, Wes Brown and Chris Kirkland return to the squad.  Luke Young, Kieran Richardson, Darren Bent and Shaun Wright-Phillips are in.  Tottenham's Michael Dawson and Watford keeper Ben Foster, who were both on World Cup stand-by, are also in McClaren's set-up.  Chelsea's Joe Cole and Manchester United's Michael Carrick are both injured, while Gary Neville, although struggling with a groin problem, is included.

Thursday, 10 August 2006 - Steve McClaren ends weeks of speculation by announcing John Terry as the new England captain, Steven Gerrard will be the vice-captain.

England Player Injuries Affecting The Match Against Greece

Michael Carrick, Midfielder,  Manchester United F.C.

Date Details
06-Aug-2006 Carrick is set to miss the start of the Premiership season after injuring his left foot against Ajax.  The midfielder lasted just 14 minutes on his second appearance Manchester United before getting injured in a tackle from behind.  "It looks like he could be out for three weeks, there's a lot of swelling, Michael has ligament damage to his ankle and it is difficult to say how long he will be out because we don't know his record with injuries.  But it looks like he could be out for three weeks and it is a real blow for the young lad. He wanted to do really well for us and this has knocked him back a bit." said boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Joe Cole, Midfielder,  Chelsea F.C.

Date Details
06-Aug-2006 Cole could miss the start of the Premiership season after suffering a knee injury during the 1-0 defeat by MLS All-Stars.  Cole had been on the pitch in Chicago for just five minutes before leaving the action clutching his right knee.  "Everybody is worried because I think it's something to do with his knee ligaments.  We will have to wait until we go back to London to see the specialist but he looks really injured." said boss Jose Mourinho.

Ledley King, Defender, Tottenham Hotspur F.C.

Date Details
30-Jul-2006 King will miss the start of the season and could be out for eight weeks after picking up a knee injury in training.  An initial scan revealed the 25-year-old England defender will be out of action until September at least.  "Ledley is out with suspected cartilage problems and he could be out for six to eight weeks."  King had recovered from the broken foot that forced him out of the World Cup.  But he will now miss new England coach Steve McClaren's first game in charge against Greece at Old Trafford on 16 August.  And King is unlikely to be fit for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Andorra and Macedonia, which take place at the start of September.

David Beckham, Midfielder, Real Madrid C.F.

Date Details
02-Jul-2006 David Beckham faces a race to be fit for the new season after being ruled out for six weeks.  The Real Madrid star has a tear in his right Achilles tendon and a "lesion" in the ligaments of his left knee.  Six weeks means he would out be until 12 August, just four days before Steve McClaren's first match as England boss, a friendly against Greece.  Beckham had scans on in his injured knee and ankle on Sunday.  A spokesman for the player said he will undergo a second scan on the injuries with the Real Madrid club doctors present.  Beckham, 31, said: "I twisted my knee in the first-half and then I went up for a header in the first five minutes of the second-half and the player landed on my Achilles."  He had planned to have three weeks' rest before returning to pre-season training with Real but the injuries could change his schedule.
01-Jul-2006 David Beckham pulls up in the match against Portugal.

Michael Owen, Forward, Newcastle United F.C.

Date Details
06-Jul-2006 Michael Owen will have an operation on his damaged right knee anterior cruciate ligament in around eight weeks' time.  Owen will return home next week to recuperate after having treatment from Dr Steadman on a cartilage problem.
21-Jun-2006 Michael Owen is out of the World Cup and back in England after rupturing his anterior cruciate knee ligament.  A scan on today confirmed the worst fears about Owen's injury following his dramatic collapse early in the match.  Owen touched down at Chester Airport at 1800 BST and was driven away by wife Louise in a Range Rover. He later hobbled into his house on crutches.  The striker said: "It's a massive blow. I knew straight away I was in trouble."
20-Jun-2006 Michael Owen collapses two minutes into the match against Sweden

Alan Smith, Midfielder, Manchester United F.C.

Date Details
06-Jul-2006 Sir Alex Ferguson says Alan Smith may be fit to return to action by the end of August. "Alan is doing very well and we are pleased with the progress.  When he was injured we said he would not play for six or seven months so he won't be back until the end of August or early September."
20-Feb-2006

Smith hopes to make a full recovery after suffering a horrific leg break.  The midfielder broke his left leg and dislocated his ankle after falling awkwardly.  "When I looked, the leg was lying one way and my ankle was pointing towards Hong Kong so I knew I was in serious trouble.  But the doctors are very positive, I've had an operation and now it's a question of starting on the road back."  The midfielder is expected to be out for at least nine months after undergoing surgery yesterday.

18-Feb-2006

Alan Smith is stretchered off with an 'horrific leg' injury in the FA Cup fifth round match against Liverpool.  Smith had only been on the pitch ten minutes before attempting to block a free-kick earned him the injury.  He will be out for the long-term.
