This year's Spring Tour to Italy, Portugal, Holland, Belgium, and
Luxembourg again included 'A' and 'B' teams. Both took time to settle down
together and there were plenty of shocks for England during the course of
the tour. To encourage the World Cup selectors, however, they had the fact
that the 'A' team showed steadily improving form, and by the end of the
tour, in the second-half of the match against Belgium, they definitely
found themselves as a side and gave a really inspiring display.
 The
opening match of the tour took place at Milan on May 11th, before a crowd
	  of 45,000 people.
The Italians, with their speed and mastery of
manœuvre, asserted their superiority from the beginning. The English
forwards, foiled time and again by the quick tackling of the Italian
defenders, never managed to get going.
Italy's first goal came after 23
minutes. Capello passed back to Magli, raced to the right wing to collect
the return, and dribbled past Eckersley to score with a terrific left-foot
drive. A few minutes later Boniperti scored again, and just before
half-time Burini sent in a snap shot which beat Middleton completely.
Within six minutes of the resumption the Italians had scored twice more.
It was the first defeat of an England 'B' team since the war.
