Multiple curved white lines comprise the background of the left-hand side of the label, crossing over horizontal white lines across the lower third, and the holographic emblem is at the centre of a white-lined cross, running to each edge. White number one on back and in centre of chest, in same font as outfield shirts. Surname in an arc in capitalised white lettering above number on back in same font as the numbers. Match details embroidered in white underneath number on chest in following format:

ENGLAND

Variations
  • Nigel Martyn wore number 13 against Spain and Korea Republic.
  • David James wore number 22 against Mexico and Korea Republic and number 13 against Netherlands (twice) and Italy.
  • Richard Wright wore number 22 against Netherlands.
  • The surname and match details did not appear on the shirt for the first seven games in which it was worn.
  • The match details also did not appear on the shirt against Italy.
  • For the three games played in the 2002 World Cup final tournament, England had the 2002 FIFA WORLD CUP KOREA JAPAN logo sewn onto the right sleeve.
  • The names of England's opponents, as they appeared in the match details, were ARGENTINA, BRAZIL, DENMARK, GREECE, HOLLAND, ITALY, SLOVAKIA, SOUTH KOREA and SWEDEN. England were named first in the home fixtures (against Greece, Italy and Sweden), plus the World Cup fixture against Brazil. In the other five fixtures in which the match details were displayed, England's name appeared second.
  • When match details were displayed for the first time, against Greece, a leading zero was used in the date (06·10·2001). For all other games played on dates where the day or month was in single figures, no leading zeroes were used in the details displayed on this shirt.
  • Against Slovakia, the following alternative format was used for the match details (full stops between the numbers of the date):

SLOVAKIA

v

ENGLAND

12.10.2002

Appearances

8 - David Seaman

5 - Nigel Martyn

2.53 - David James

0.47 - Richard Wright

  • Martyn actually played in eight games, the same as Seaman, except that six of them were only for half of the game (starting five of them).

  • James only started one game, but played in six (none of which lasted more than a half).

  • Wright's appearance, his second and last for England, came about when he was called into action against the Netherlands, three minutes after substitute, James had replaced Martyn.

Clean Sheets

4 - David Seaman

2 - Nigel Martyn

1.53 - David James

0.47 - Richard Wright

  • Martyn's clean sheets were actually made up from four games, in each of which he only played one half.

Penalties Conceded

1 - David James.

  • Vincenzo Montella scored Italy's winner, in the second minute of added time.

Penalties Missed

1 - David James, Nigel Martyn.

  • Martyn saved from Spain's Javi Moreno, whilst Mexico's José Abundis shot wide, when facing James.

This was England's first all-black kit, though it was worn with white socks on its first outing. It was also the first goalkeeper's kit to feature the match details embroidered onto the chest.

Sven-Göran Eriksson kept David Seaman as the first-choice 'keeper for competitive matches, but he was very keen to use as many players as he could in friendly internationals, and it was rare for one of Seaman's understudies to last for more than a half, before being substituted.

Seaman was, however, coming to the end of his career and he was at fault for the goal against Brazil that ended England's World Cup hopes in 2002.

The shirt in the photos above was issued to Nigel Martyn for England's crucial World Cup qualifier against Greece at Old Trafford. It appears here by kind permission of the National Football Shirt Collection (England Match Shirts), also part of the Neville Evans Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft).
