This was probably the most memorable of all England's
goalkeeping jerseys, a very simple yellow round-neck top with the Three Lions
emblem. Umbro did not change the style when inheriting the contract from
Bukta in 1965. It was, of course, proudly worn by the great Gordon
Banks, England's custodian, when they won the World Cup.
Initially, no
number was worn on the back of this jersey, but at the 1966 World Cup and in
the semi-final and third place play-off at the 1968 European Championships
final tournament, a
red number 1 was worn. Then, from the beginning of the 1969-70 season, it
became a permanent fixture.
In the 1970
World Cup, an Aertex jersey was worn against Romania (for the first half,
when they suddenly realised that Romania were also in yellow shirts and made
a switch), Czechoslovakia and West Germany. The emblem on this jersey had a
yellow background, the same colour as the jersey, rather than the usual
white.
The Umbro diamond first
appeared on the right breast against Greece at Wembley in 1971 and, apart from
in the return fixture, was present right
to the end of the Umbro contract in 1974.
When England met Sweden at Wembley, in 1968, Alex
Stepney walked out in a blue jersey, despite Sweden wearing blue shirts. It
would appear that they had expected Sweden to be in their usual yellow shirts.
Stepney made a quick change into a yellow jersey, with a red number 12 on the
back. As England 'keepers were not wearing numbers at the time, this was
probably the jersey he had been issued with for the following month's European
Championship final tournament, in Italy. 12 was his squad number. The
fact that he appeared for the second half, without a number on the back,
suggests that he then switched to the jersey he should have been wearing.
A minor state of affairs in a very eventful month for the Manchester United
goalkeeper, who followed up his only England appearance, by winning the
European Cup in the same stadium, the following week.
