Most Appearances |
Including the lightweight versions worn
in 1970 and 1974, this uniform was worn on twelve occasions,
with 43 players appearing in it.
Alan Ball and Bobby Moore both made
ten
appearances in the uniform.
Four players made their
international debuts in this shirt, with Bob McNab and Peter Osgood each
going on to win four caps.
Six players appeared for the last
time in this red uniform, most notably Sir Bobby Charlton, whose then record
106th cap was against West Germany in 1970. Keith Newton (27th cap) and
Brian Labone (26th) also ended their international careers after the same
game, whilst for Derek Temple, the first appearance of this uniform
coincided with his one and only England appearance.
Having missed out on the World Cup
triumph, Jimmy Greaves won his 57th and last England cap in the red shirt,
the following year, alongside the man who had taken his place to such great
effect, Sir Geoff Hurst.
After winning the World Cup, Jack
Charlton, George Cohen and Nobby Stiles never wore the red shirt again. |

Top Scorers |
Sir Geoff Hurst was top scorer with
five
goals, three of which were his historic hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup
Final, his first appearance in England red, whilst his 24th and last England
goal was also in the red shirt. Sir Geoff was also top scorer in the 1965
white uniform.
Alan Mullery was the only player to
score his first England goal in this uniform and it was also his last. It
was the opener in the 1970 World Cup quarter-final.
The only other players, after Mullery
and Sir Geoff, to score their last international goal in this uniform, were
Terry Paine (7) and Frank Worthington (2). |
|
Captains |
Bobby Moore was captain for ten of
the games, including his greatest day. Emlyn Hughes led the team out
on the other two occasions, in 1974. |

The classic image of plain red shirts, white
shorts and red socks was launched on England's end-of-season tour in 1965 in
West Germany, but is forever associated with a certain July afternoon at
Wembley in 1966 when a rather more famous encounter with the Germans was
etched into the nation's memory.
This uniform incorporated England's
first crew-neck red shirt and was worn with short sleeves on its first
appearance, but it was the long-sleeved version that established itself as
the second-choice uniform in the wake of the national team's finest hour.
In
1970 and 1974,
another short-sleeved version appeared in Aertex material to help the
players cope with games played in hot climates, but the World Cup-winning
long sleeves made two farewell appearances in the 1971-72 season in
England's European Championship campaign, fittingly bowing out in West
Germany.
