Notes
Monday,
10 November 2003 - Manager Sven-Göran Eriksson announced a 23-man squad
for England's friendly match against Denmark at Old Trafford, Manchester on
Sunday, 16 November 2003. Tuesday,
11 November 2003 - The luckless Gareth Southgate, recalled to the squad
yesterday in the absence of Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell, was forced to
withdraw with a thigh injury. A late call was promptly given to Anthony
Gardner, who had not previously been named to a senior England squad.
Gardner became the squad's third uncapped player, joining Glen Johnson
and Scott Parker, and is one of two, with Johnson, to receive a first call to
the senior squad.

Tottenham Hotspur and he is omitted from the England squad. |
|
David
Beckham, Midfielder, Real Madrid CF |
|
Date |
Details |
|
11-Nov-2003 |
The England
captain is nursing a bruised lower back, although there are no indications
this will cause him to miss the Denmark game. Beckham sustained
the injury during Real Madrid's 4-1 win over Sevilla
over the weekend. Club doctors have advised him to rest, and he has
been omitted from the Real Madrid squad that will face Vallodolid in a
friendly on
Tuesday. |
|
Wayne
Rooney, Forward, Everton FC |
|
Date |
Details |
|
10-Nov-2003 |
Rooney gets the flu that has
affected several Everton players and was omitted from the Everton
squad facing Blackburn Rovers on Monday. He was named to the
England squad anyway, and his progress is to be monitored by
both Everton and the F.A. |
|
Kieron
Dyer, Midfielder, Newcastle United FC |
|
Date |
Details |
|
09-Nov-2003 |
Dyer is
omitted from the Newcastle United squad that faces Chelsea. He is
still struggling to shake off a niggling hamstring injury. He will
likely miss the Denmark game. |
| 05-Nov-2003 |
Dyer does
not travel into Europe with Newcastle United. He is struggling to
shake off a hamstring injury. |
|
Michael
Owen, Forward, Liverpool FC |
|
Date |
Details |
|
09-Nov-2003 |
Houllier
leaves Owen out of the playing squad to face Manchester United.
Owen's ankle injury has not healed sufficiently for a recall.
It is almost certain he will miss the Denmark match as well. |
| 04-Nov-2003 |
Owen is
struggling with another ankle injury, different to the injury that
forced him to miss the Turkey game. His manager, Gerard Houllier
is hoping a week of treatment will see him return to
fitness. But as Houllier will only use Owen on an intermittent basis,
the forward is unlikely to figure against Denmark as he aims to regain
full fitness. |
|
Paul
Scholes, Midfielder, Manchester United FC |
|
Date |
Details |
| 30-Oct-2003 |
Sven Goran-Eriksson
will not give Scholes extra time to recover from his injury before
naming his squad on 10 November. |
| 28-Oct-2003 |
Scholes has
an operation following reoccurence of his groin problem. "He is likely to be
out for three to four weeks." said an Old Trafford
spokesman. |
|
Owen
Hargreaves, Midfielder, FC Bayern München AG |
|
Date |
Details |
| 09-Nov-2003 |
Hargreaves is not yet match fit to earn a FC Bayern München AG recall against Borussia Dortmund, Nordrhein-Westfalen. His failure to acquire a minimum
fitness level will result in his omission from the England squad to face
Denmark. |
| 02-Nov-2003 |
Hargreaves'
manager Ottmar Hitzfeld says, "He's making good progress,"
and should be fit enough to
rejoin squad sessions in a few days time. |
| 14-Oct-2003 |
Hargreaves
reveals he has been suffering mysterious pain for the previous six
months and has been unable to perform at 100 percent. "I have
some kind of problem in the pelvic area." he said, noting
that the pain has been so
intense, he has been forced to ease up in training.
"Everything involving the ball has been difficult, passing,
shooting.... I haven't been able to do much for months now, I just avoid
it whenever possible." The mystery ailment first appeared in March and has
not cleared up since, defying all attempts at diagnosis. Hargreaves has
consulted a number of specialists and every possible treatment has been
explored. Hargreaves reluctantly accepts he may be forced to take
a break from playing. |
