All information is complete to and including England's last match, the third of the 1956-57 season, against Yugoslavia on 28 November 1956.

Diary

Friday, 14 September 1956 - "The World Cup first leg match between England and Denmark will be played under floodlight at Wolverhampton on December 5."

Wednesday, 28 November 1956
- Following England's match against Yugoslavia, the names of 22 players for the World Cup qualifying round match against Denmark are announced.
It includes the team that beat Yugoslavia tonight, with the four reserves, plus, Jim Langley, Joe Kennedy, Tony Marchi, Gordon Turner, Albert Quixall, Tommy Thompson and David Pegg. The team that will face Denmark next week at Molineux will be announced tomorrow. It is unlikely it will show many changes, though a replacement may be necessary for Johnny Haynes, whose leg is badly bruised.  All except six of the party have played for England previously, and Tony Marchi is the only complete newcomer to representative honours. His selection is a fitting reward for England-class performances in club games this season.

Saturday, 1 December 1956 -
"England's selectors have discarded their high-flying dreams to find a settled World Cup side. From now on, to use the words of Walter Winterbottom 'It looks like horses for courses.' That accounts for the switch of Preston's Tom Finney back to outside-left after 115 not-so-successful minutes as England's centre-forward, and for the inclusion of that bouncing 13-stone 'Babe', Duncan Edwards, at inside-left."
"It's a complete surprise to be picked there again. Still, I'm playing again for England. That's all that matters." -
Tom Finney.
Tony Marchi, the Tottenham Hotspur wing-half will travel as a reserve. But his only chance of winning his first cap is if one of the other players withdraws from the team, as FIFA do not permit substitutions during their World Cup matches.

Monday, 3 December 1956 - The England party assemble at West Bromwich today.  After limbering up they will travel to St. Andrews to watch Birmingham's floodlight game with Zagreb.

Tuesday morning, 4 December 1956 - A twenty-minute each-way practice match was played against West Bromwich Albion FC at The Hawthorns.
West Bromwich won the match 4-2 with Tommy Taylor and Ronnie Clayton scoring for England.
