Friday, 4 December 2009 -
England have been drawn to face the United States,
Algeria and Slovenia in the group stage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Fabio Capello's men will play the United States
in Rustenburg on 12 June, Algeria in Cape Town on 18 June and Slovenia in Port
Elizabeth on 23 June.

- Fabio Capello has made several surprise selections in his preliminary 30-man
World Cup squad.
Uncapped duo Adam Johnson and Michael
Dawson both feature along with Tom Huddlestone.  Jamie Carragher comes out
of international retirement, while fellow defender Ledley King and the injured
Gareth Barry have also been picked.  Stephen Warnock, Scott Parker and
Darren Bent are chosen, with the final 23-man squad to be announced by 1 June.
Under Fifa regulations, Capello is
permitted to bring players into his 23-man squad who were not included in the
preliminary party.  But that would be an unusual move, meaning the final
party he takes to this summer's finals in South Africa is likely to come from
the one he has already named.  Capello revealed he tried to persuade
Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes to come out of international
retirement, but failed.  "We tried to convince him to return but he said
no, he'd prefer to stay with his family."
Capello has included 23-year-old Joe
Hart among his three goalkeepers after the Manchester City player enjoyed an
outstanding season on loan at Birmingham.  Like Hart, left-backs Leighton
Baines and Steven Warnock have one senior cap to their names and are graduates
of the England Under-21 side.
But for cover at right-back and central
defence, Capello has opted for experience with the return of versatile Liverpool
defender Carragher, who appeared at Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup before
retiring in the summer of 2007.
With doubts over the fitness of Rio
Ferdinand, and Wes Brown and Joleon Lescott ruled out through injury, Capello
and assistant Franco Baldini managed to persuade Carragher into reversing his
decision.

- Fabio Capello culled seven players from his squad.  Theo
Walcott, Leighton Baines, Darren Bent, Adam Johnson, Tom Huddlestone, Scott
Parker and Michael Dawson.

- Rio Ferdinand will miss the World Cup after suffering a knee
injury in the team's first training session in South Africa.  The
31-year-old has been ruled out for up to six weeks with ligament damage to his
left knee.  Tottenham centre-back Michael Dawson is to fly out later on
Friday as the replacement for Ferdinand.  Steven Gerrard will now take over
from the Manchester United defender as England captain for the tournament.
"It is obviously bad news and everyone with the squad is very disappointed and
sorry for Rio," said England manager Fabio Capello.  "It was an accidental
injury in training, but had nothing to do with the pitch."  Ferdinand was
sent to a local hospital for a scan after suffering the injury late on in
training in a challenge with striker Emile Heskey, described by Capello as "a
normal tackle".

- Gareth Barry has confirmed he will miss England's opening World Cup match
against the United States on Saturday.  He has recovered quicker than
expected from an ankle injury, sustained while playing for Manchester City in
May, and begins full training on Tuesday.  But manager Fabio Capello had
already said the midfielder, who was given a 13 June deadline to return to full
training, was unlikely to feature.  And Barry confirmed: "I've been told
I'm not playing to give me more time."

- Ledley King looks set to miss England's next Group C World Cup game against
Algeria on Friday after suffering a groin strain against the United States.
The Tottenham defender was replaced at half-time during the 1-1 draw with the US
in Rustenburg on Saturday.  "He has an abductor tear," said Fabio Capello.
"He'll probably be ready for the game after Algeria."

- Ledley King is expected to be out for three weeks because of the groin strain
he suffered against the United States.  That would rule the Tottenham
defender out of England's remaining group matches and a potential last 16 clash.
However, England still hope he will play some part in the tournament and he will
not be flown home early.  King underwent a scan on Sunday, which revealed
that his injury was a "groin muscle strain".  The Football Association then
forwarded the scan on to Spurs for a second opinion.

- During a drab scoreless draw against Algeria, Jamie Carragher picked up his
second booking of the tournament.  He is suspended for the final group
match against Slovenia.
