After 26 goals in 74 league appearances, Bolton Wanderers FC paid a 25,000 transfer fee for his services on 3 January 1952, the talks took three weeks to complete after Wolverhampton Wanderers FC's attempts to prise Hassall away from Leeds Road broke down, despite offering Jesse Pye as part of the exchange. Shortly after the transfer, rumours were reported that Hassall was on his way to Derby County FC, in exhange for Johnny Morris.
