England Player Honours -
France Football Ballon d'Or -
European Footballer of the Year
2002

France Football European Footballer of the Year Award 2002

No England player placed in the top 10  in the 2002 voting,  no doubt a reflection of promise disappointed in  the  European club and  World Cup competitions.  Liverpool's Michael Owen, the 2001 winner, was the top English vote-getter, with five points, putting him level in 13th place with Ruud van Nistelrooy of Manchester United and Holland.  The only other English player to gain recognition was Rio Ferdinand,  who played for both  Leeds United and Manchester United during  the year and  got two points, level with t wo other players in 21st place.  The only English Premiership player in the top 10 was Arsenal's Thierry Henry of France, with 54 points putting him in 6th place.

The winner was chosen by vote of European football journalists, one from each of UEFA's member nations, which totalled 51 in 2002.  Voters selected their top five players in order of preference, and points were assigned to each vote, 5 for a 1st place vote, 4 for a 2nd place vote and so on down to 1 point for a 5th place vote.
