Diary

Friday, 27 January 2006 - The European Championships Qualification draw is made today in Montreux. It pits England up against Croatia, Russia, Israel, Macedonia, Andorra and Estonia.

Friday, 3 March 2006 - Group E fixtures were negotiated today at a meeting between the Football Association and fellow participants in Nyon, Switzerland.

Friday, 29 September 2006 - Steve McClaren has called up Scott Parker and Wayne Rooney for the Euro 2008 Qualifiers with Macedonia and Croatia.  Newcastle United captain Parker has been in excellent form for his club and is a straight replacement for Owen Hargreaves who is recovering from a broken leg.  Parker, whose debut came in the 3-2 defeat to Denmark at Old Trafford on 16 November 2003, will be hoping to win his third cap.

Monday, 2 October 2006 - Charlton Athletic's Darren Bent has been called into the England squad after Everton's Andrew Johnson was forced to pull out.  Striker Johnson will miss Saturday's game against Macedonia at Old Trafford and the 11 October trip to Croatia because of a hamstring injury.  Steve McClaren said: "It's a real blow as he has made a massive impact with Everton this season.  He was certainly knocking very hard on the door for a place in the team.  We are fortunate that we are able to call up Darren from the under-21's.  He has already got experience of being involved in several senior squads and he is a player with excellent ability and is a real goal threat."  Johnson suffered his injury in the last minute of Everton's 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Saturday.

McClaren has revealed that Jonathan Woodgate is close to a recall.  The 26-year-old defender won the last of his five England appearances in March 2004 but has caught the eye again since moving from Real Madrid to Middlesbrough on loan.   "He is one we are looking at.  He is playing well but his games have been limited and he has to build up that kind of fitness over a season."

Wednesday, 4 October 2006 - Jermaine Jenas was missing as England trained.  The 23-year-old has suffered a knock to his knee but is expected to return to training on Thursday.  Jenas was the only absentee as the squad were put through their paces at the Carrington training complex.

Steve McClaren is considering changing his system, which could mean a place for the recalled Scott Parker.  McClaren says he has not ruled out switching to a five-man midfield.

Saturday, 7 October 2006 - Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of today's qualifier against Macedonia at Old Trafford, with Tottenham's Ledley King set to deputise.  The 27-year-old Ferdinand was in line to gain his 55th cap but has picked up a back injury.  King will make his first appearance in an England shirt since before the World Cup, partnering John Terry at the back.  Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney will also start their first game under Steve McClaren.

A scoreless draw in England's match against Macedonia.  Steven Gerrard is cautioned, and is suspended for Wednesday's match against Croatia.

Monday, 9 October 2006 - Steve McClaren expects Rio Ferdinand and Ledley King to be fit to play against Croatia.  King was absent from training on Monday.  "Rio has trained and it's good to have him back with us.  Ledley King missed training but is also expected to train with the rest of the squad on Tuesday."  King could have a key part to play on Wednesday if McClaren decides to move him into the midfield holding position.

Tuesday, 10 October 2006 - Ledley King has withdrawn from the England squad.  The Tottenham Hotspur skipper, 25, has pulled out as a precaution to protect a knee injury.  King had surgery on a long-standing problem over the summer when he was recovering from a broken foot but the knee still flares up after games.
