Notes

Wednesday, 9 November 2005 - Ledley King is an injury concern for England ahead of Saturday's friendly against Argentina.  King missed the squad's first training session with a knee injury.  The extent of the problem has not been revealed by England's medical staff.  Frank Lampard also missed Wednesday's run-out because he felt 'off-colour', but is likely to return to training on Thursday.  Meanwhile, Wayne Bridge is in line for a recall for the friendly against Argentina, despite playing only 60 minutes of first-team football this season.  Sol Campbell is likely to partner John Terry in central defence, while the preferred strike-force of Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney are available.

Sunday, 6 November 2005 - Sven-Göran Eriksson has made four changes to his England squad for the friendly match against Argentina in Geneva next week.  David James and Michael Carrick return to the squad having missed the double-header against Austria and Poland whilst Wayne Bridge has the chance of a first cap since November last year.  Paul Konchesky made his England debut at Upton Park against Australia in February 2003 and, with Ashley Cole missing through injury, is the second left-back included in the squad.  As well as Ashley Cole, those players unavailable for selection due to injury include Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Owen Hargreaves, Chris Kirkland and Jonathan Woodgate.

Friday, 4 November 2005 - Darren Bent and Kieran Richardson have been included in the England Under-21 squad for the upcoming European Under-21 Championship play-off against France.

England Player Injuries Affecting The Matches Against Argentina

Jonathan Woodgate, Defender, Real Madrid C.F.

Date Details

06-Nov-2005

Woodgate was injured today playing for Real Madrid, although it is unclear whether he would have been selected for the England squad.  The centre-back came off after 23 minutes of Real's match against Real Zaragoza with a hamstring problem.

Kieron Dyer, Midfielder, Newcastle United F.C.

Date Details

03-Nov-2005

Dyer is set to miss Saturday's Premiership game against Birmingham City with a mystery illness.  Dyer played for the first time this season in the 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday following a hamstring tear.  But Dyer, 26, has broken down again and has been referred to a specialist in an effort to clear up the problem.  A club statement read: "Kieron Dyer has a medical problem which has contributed to his lack of fitness.  Unfortunately, he has suffered another reaction."

03-Oct-2005

Newcastle United boss Graeme Souness has played down reports suggesting that midfielder Kieron Dyer will be out of action until Christmas.  The 26-year-old has been battling with a hamstring injury that has sidelined him since August.  "Nobody can put a time on it.  I don't know where this talk has come from.  Christmas has not been mentioned by anyone at the club.  All we are concerned with is getting Kieron fit."  However, Souness said the situation regarding Dyer's injury was not improving.  "He's got a problem with both his hamstrings and he's now feeling another part of his hamstring, higher up on his backside.  He'll be very frustrated by the situation; he loves playing football - that's why he does it so well - and it will be hurting him at this time.  He sees we've bought good players and wants to be on the pitch with them.  I want him to get on the pitch because he's one of our door openers."

Chris Kirkland, Goalkeeper, Liverpool F.C., on loan to West Bromwich Albion F.C.

Date Details

27-Oct-2005

Kirkland will miss West Bromwich Albion's next two Premiership games after suffering a heavy knock during Sunday's 2-0 league defeat at Bolton Wanderers.  Kirkland bruised one of his kidneys and will now sit out the Premiership games against Newcastle United and West Ham United.  "It's nothing serious but Chris has been advised to rest between two and four weeks," said boss Bryan Robson.

Ashley Cole, Defender, Arsenal F.C.

Date Details

14-Oct-2005

Ashley Cole expects to be sidelined for eight weeks as he recovers from a stress fracture in his right foot.  The 24-year-old has undergone surgery to correct the problem.  "The operation went well and I hope to be back in eight weeks.  I've been told that's a realistic time to aim for. The team has a few injuries and it's going to be a testing time."

04-Oct-2005

Ashley Cole withdraws from the England squad to face Austria and England.  He is suffering a stress fracture of the foot.

Gary Neville, Defender, Manchester United F.C.

Date Details

23-Sep-2005

Gary Neville faces six weeks out after undergoing groin surgery on Friday.  Neville, 30, suffered the injury during Manchester United's Champions League qualifier against Debrecen in Hungary last month.  He was hoping to return to action against Blackburn Rovers but, after breaking down in training on Thursday, decided to undergo surgery.  Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It is a blow but we think it is the best course of action.  The recovery time from the operation is a month and then it will take another two or three weeks to get his fitness back."  Neville will be ruled out until the middle of November and will miss the key Premiership clash with leaders Chelsea on 6 November.  He will also be sidelined for England's World Cup qualifying matches against Austria and Poland next month.

Stewart Downing, Midfielder, Middlesbrough F.C.

Date Details

02-Sep-2005

Downing has been ruled out for at least three months after undergoing knee surgery.  The 21-year-old England winger had an operation to repair cartilage damage and faces a long period of recovery.  Middlesbrough coach Steve Round told the club website: "It's obviously a major blow, both for Stewart and the team, that he will be out for so long.  I know Stewart would love to play in next year's World Cup and there's still every chance for him to do so.  The squad for the finals won't be named until the end of the season.  Stewart should be back and flying long before then, so he should set his mind on making a full recovery and getting back to his best. There's every chance he could make the squad."  Downing's rehabilitation begins next week when he is likely to undertake light work on an exercise bike.
