A Johnny Haynes-inspired Fulham (without George Cohen) won their fifth game in succession, after losing eleven of their previous 13 games in all competitions had left them rock-bottom and seemingly odds-on favourites for relegation. Four more wins in their last eight games took them clear of Northampton, who went down in their place.

Although Manchester City failed to overcome mid-table Plymouth, the draw took them to the top of the table and they still had a game in hand over Huddersfield. It also extended their unbeaten run to twenty games in all competitions, stretching back four months to December 1965. They went out of the FA Cup, two days later, to eventual winners, Everton, but only lost one more league game as they secured their promotion back to the top flight, as champions of the second division.

Millwall's derby victory against Brentford took them back to the top, though Hull, whose game was called off because of the weather, now had two games in hand and they would use them to clinch the title. QPR's games in hand were the only real threat to the top two, but they were unable to capitalise on them. The Lions were four games away from becoming the first club to complete two consecutive Football League seasons unbeaten at home, and they went on to extend the run to a record 59 games before losing to Plymouth Argyle in the second division in January 1967.

Colchester were disappointed to concede a late equaliser at home to Wrexham, but the race was far from over. Only one point separated the top six, and the eventual top two (Doncaster and Darlington) were not yet in promotion places. Colchester held on to the fourth and last promotion place on goal average at the end of the season.
