An incredibly tight finish was fast approaching. West Ham were the form team, winning six in a row, but then failed to win any of their last seven games and finished eighth. Rotherham came with a charge and won eight out of their last nine games, even beating Liverpool 6-1 in their last game, but still lost out on goal average. Birmingham's charge took them to the title, whilst Luton held on to reach the top flight for the first time, only goal average separating the top three.
