This was probably the most memorable of all England's goalkeeping tops, a very simple yellow round-neck shirt with the Three Lions emblem. It was, of course, proudly worn by the great Gordon Banks, England's custodian, when they won the World Cup.

Initially, no number was worn on the back of this shirt, but at the 1966 World Cup and in selected games over the next three seasons, a red number one was worn. Then, from the beginning of the 1969-70 season, it became a permanent fixture.

In the 1970 World Cup, an Aertex shirt was worn against Romania (for the first half, before changing at half-time because Romania were also in yellow shirts), Czechoslovakia and West Germany. The emblem on this shirt had a yellow background, the same colour as the shirt, rather than the usual white.

The Umbro diamond first appeared on the right breast against Greece at Wembley in 1971 and, apart from in the return fixture, was worn in every game up to England switching to Admiral kits in 1974.

When England met Sweden at Wembley, in 1968, Alex Stepney walked out in a blue top, despite Sweden wearing blue shirts. It would appear that they had expected Sweden to be in their usual yellow shirts. Stepney made a quick change into a yellow top, with a red number twelve on the back. As England 'keepers were not wearing numbers at the time, this was probably the jersey he had been issued with for the following month's European Championship final tournament, in Italy. Twelve was his squad number. The fact that he appeared for the second half, without a number on the back, suggests that he had then switched to the shirt he should have been wearing. A minor state of affairs in a very eventful month for the Manchester United goalkeeper, who followed up his only England appearance, by winning the European Cup in the same stadium, the following week.

The first two shirts from the left above were both worn by Gordon Banks; firstly, one of the later shirts (1971 or '72) with the Umbro logo. This photo was provided by Simon Shakeshaft, curator of the National Football Shirt Collection at England Match Shirts, which is part of the Neville Evans Collection, as is the number-22 shirt, to the far right, which was believed to have been worn by Joe Corrigan on his only Under-23 appearance, against USSR in 1969. The shirt in the middle is the Aertex 1970 World Cup shirt.

Matches in which England wore the 1965 Yellow Goalkeeper Uniform
This list is subject to change, as we are not yet certain if England's goalkeeper was wearing Umbro shirts in the same games that the outfield players were. It seems likely that that was the case from the 1966 World Cup onwards, but we are less certain in the year leading up to the tournament, when England were wearing both Umbro and Bukta kits.
