Diary

Wednesday, 11 April 2007 - The FA can confirm that Brazil will be England's first opponents at the new Wembley Stadium. The England team will mark their return to Wembley with a friendly international against the South Americans on Friday 1 June.  It will be the first England game at Wembley since facing Germany in October 2000. The match will provide the team with high calibre opposition in the build-up to the Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia on 6 June.  FA Chief Executive Brian Barwick said: "We're delighted to be able to announce that Brazil will be the first team to take on England at the new Wembley. It's a fantastic match to mark the team's return to the stadium after nearly seven years on the road around the country. Brazil featured in some memorable matches at the old Wembley. The new stadium is a fantastic football arena and I'm confident there will be many new memories created there for England fans over the coming years."

Saturday, 26 May 2007 - Steve McClaren has named a 26 man squad for the forthcoming matches with Brazil and Estonia.  McClaren has recalled Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham while Michael Owen has also been included in a senior squad for the first time since the World Cup.  David Bentley and Nicky Shorey, of Blackburn Rovers and Reading respectively, have been named for the first time after eye-catching displays in Friday's 'B' international victory over Albania.  Chelsea's Joe Cole, whose season has been blighted by injury, will join up with the squad after a long period away from the international scene.

Sunday, 27 May 2007 - Aaron Lennon has withdrawn from the England squad because of a twisted knee.  The Tottenham Hotspur winger had a scan after picking up the injury during England B's 3-1 win against Albania on Friday.  Lennon's withdrawal increases the chances of the recalled David Beckham starting against the Brazilians on Friday.

Tuesday, 29 May 2007 - Rio Ferdinand and Michael Dawson have been forced to pull out of the England squad because of groin injuries.  Jamie Carragher could come in for the friendly against Brazil and Estonia.  Ferdinand and Dawson's withdrawal leaves Steve McClaren with a defensive headache.  Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Jonathan Woodgate and Micah Richards have already been ruled out, meaning McClaren is now without three of his four first-choice defenders.  Cole's back-up at left-back Wayne Bridge is also a major doubt for the Brazil game, with Nicky Shorey standing by for his first full cap.  Carragher and Ledley King will compete for the right to partner skipper John Terry in defence and, if Carragher is chosen, Phil Neville is almost certain to come in at right-back.
