Death Tuesday, 15 March 2005, after a long illness, in Bophupthatswana, South Africa, aged 77 years 278 days [not registered in UK]. Reported on 17 March.

Club Career

Club(s) Began his career playing for Northwood Mission in Hanley, before joining local team Port Vale FC as an amateur in 1945, signing professional terms two months later.  After 148 league appearances and five goals, he transferred to the First Division with Huddersfield Town AFC on March 1951 for £10,000.  He left Town after 363 league appearances and 25 goals, who became the player manager of AFC Bournemouth & Boscombe for £2000 in March 1961, where he played in another 78 league matches, scoring twice.

Managerial Career

Club(s) After becoming player manager of AFC Bournemouth & Boscombe in March 1961, he joined Watford FC as Manager in June 1963, then onto Ipswich Town FC in September 1964.  A successful management spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC between November 1968 and May 1976.  McGarry went to Saudi Arabia to coach the national side from June 1976, before returning to manage Newcastle United FC in November 1977, ending his tenure in August 1980.  After a brief stint as a Brighton & Hove Albion FC scout, and a coach for Power Dynamo, Zambia, and also the Zambian national coach, he later rejoined Wolverhampton Wanderers FC for his second spell as manager between September & November 1985, for 61 days.  McGarry immediately returned to Bophathatswana, where he remained as their national coach or a number of years.
Club honours Football League Second Division winners 1967-68; Texaco Cup winners 1971; UEFA Cup runners-up 1971-72;  Football League Cup winners 1973-74.
