Playing Career

Club(s)
Although born in Basingstoke, Cleverley grew up in Bradford, and was soon a part of the youth set-up at Bradford City AFC.  Within a year, however, he was signed as a twelve-year-old, to the Manchester United FC Academy, to become an integral part of the youth teams. Cleverley was sent out on various loans. To Leicester City FC from 16 January 2009. Then Watford FC from 18 August 2009. Cleverley then went to Wigan Athletic FC on 31 August 2010 for the season. He returned to United in 2011 to break into the first team. Then, on 2 September 2014, Transfer Deadline day, it was a tug-of-war for Cleverley, with both Everton FC and Aston Villa FC vying for his signature. With contract discussions going well into the night, Cleverley finally signed on a season-long loan deal with Aston Villa FC. When his loan-period ended, so did his contract with United, so on 5 June 2015, free agent Cleverley was signed by Everton FC, effective 1 July. On 12 January 2017, he rejoined Watford FC on loan until, on 31 March, the deal became permanent for £8 million, effective from 1 July. It was on 1 July 2023 that Cleverley announced his retirement from playing because of injury.
