Alf Ramsey's Ipswich took advantage of Burnley's home defeat to go
back to the top of the table, and they would stay unbeaten to secure a
historic first title, in their first-ever top-flight season, whilst
Burnley were unable to catch them despite their games in hand in a
torturous April of eleven fixtures in all competitions.

Liverpool's game at Swansea had been postponed, five days earlier, due
to a smallpox outbreak in Glamorgan, but they still had games in hand,
and they had gone 26 league matches at home unbeaten, a run stretching
back to December 1960. Leyton Orient failed to close the gap after
losing at home, but it did not matter in that season, because they
earned the same number of points away as at home, and scored more
goals away from home, as they held off Sunderland's challenge to
finish runners-up to Liverpool, to secure their only top-flight season
to-date.

With Portsmouth on the brink of securing promotion, they suddenly lost
confidence and suffered a third successive defeat. This would stretch
to four games without scoring, but their earlier domination stood them
in good stead and they cemented their top-two placing, nine days
later, on Easter Monday, with the championship title following at the
end of the same week.

After 33 seasons since 1921,
Accrington Stanley withdrew from the Football League on 7 March 1962,
and five days later, their 33 results from the season were expunged,
with 48 points being taken away from the other 23 clubs in the
division. Millwall benefited as they had only played Accrington once,
and they went on to win the title by a point from Colchester United,
ending a run of four seasons in the fourth division. Oxford United won
the race to replace Accrington, at the end of the season.
