Variations
  • Against Paraguay, England had a full-colour FIFA WORLD CUP GERMANY 2006 logo heat-pressed onto the upper right sleeve.

  • For the first two games in which this shirt was worn, the 'v' in the match details did not have a white border.

  • Chris Kirkland wore number 13 against Greece.

  • In the European Championship qualification matches, England had the UEFA EURO 2008 logo heat-pressed onto the upper right sleeve.

  • For the last four games in which this shirt was worn, the number one worn on the chest and back was changed to a navy-blue mesh number, as had been worn on the outfield shirts introduced in 2007.

  • For the last two games in which this shirt was worn, England had a SOUTH AFRICA 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP logo heat-pressed onto the upper right sleeve.

  • The names of England's opponents, as they appeared in the match details, were ANDORRA, CROATIA, FRANCE, GREECE, HOLLAND, ISRAEL and PARAGUAY. England were named first in the first two games, plus the game at Wembley, against Croatia, and they were named second in each of the other seven games.

Appearances

5.5 - Paul Robinson

3 - David James

1 - Scott Carson

0.5 - Chris Kirkland

  • Kirkland's appearance at half-time, with England four goals to the good against the European Champions, Greece, earned his father £10,000 after betting that his son would play for England before he reached the age of thirty. He had placed the bet, 14 years earlier. Kirkland had first made the England squad in 2003 and kept a 45-minute clean sheet when he finally made the grade, but he never played for his country again.

Penalties Conceded

1 - David James

  • Franck Ribéry scored the only goal of the game, the second successive meeting with France, whereby England had lost to a winner from the penalty spot. Zinedine Zidane had dealt the previous blow at Euro 2004 in Lisbon.

This all-yellow ensemble made its debut in the World Cup Finals in Germany, after David James had modelled the shirt at the launch of the new red kit on 27 February 2006. Curiously, it was worn on that occasion with the blue shorts and black socks of the new blue goalkeeper kit, launched at the same time.

The matching yellow shorts and socks appeared with the top, however, ready for the opening World Cup match. It was only the second-choice 'keeper's kit and it was only worn on that occasion because England's opponents, Paraguay were in an all-blue kit. That game was its only appearance in the tournament.

Replica buyers were assured that it would be around for two years, however, by the presence of a circular black plastic disc attached to the right hip with the legend, 'KICK OFF 2006 FULL TIME 2008' and the Football Association were true to Umbro's words. It may never have been first choice and only appeared at home twice, but it stuck around and saw off two other goalkeeping outfits used for the last time in between its first and tenth appearances. This kit even appeared in two consecutive World Cup competitions, also sporting the logo of a third competition, the intervening European Championship qualifiers. Strangely, eight of the ten appearances were against teams wearing all blue and only the Netherlands were not wearing blue shirts when in opposition to it, though in the past, their orange shirts would have been deemed to be a clash with yellow.

Croatia provided the opposition for three of its appearances. The last one, in 2008, saw a famous 4-1 away win in Zagreb put England well on the way to South Africa, but the two previous European Championship encounters were particularly damaging to each of the respective goalkeepers. The 2006 defeat in Zagreb included the horrific Gary Neville own goal, when his back pass struck a divot and eluded Paul Robinson's attempted kick, before bobbling tamely into the net.

At Wembley, just over a year later, Scott Carson, in only his second full international, allowed a speculative shot from Nick Kranjcar to bounce off him in wet conditions and into the net. It was a nightmare moment for the young 'keeper and unsettled England as they went crashing out of the competition when they only needed a draw. It was also a defeat that cost Steve McClaren his job as coach. Carson did not play in another competitive match for England. When Fabio Capello took on the England coach's position, he reinstated 37-year-old David James as England's number one.
