This jersey was originally issued as
England's second-choice goalkeeper jersey for the 1990 World Cup, but was
not required because England did not meet any opponents in yellow shirts to
clash with the first-choice yellow uniform. It eventually appeared on the
1991 tour, where it enjoyed a brief spell as first-choice, before being
discarded in favour of the yellow uniform at the beginning of the 1991-92
season.
The photographs
above are of the jersey issued to Chris Woods for the 1990 World Cup, kindly
provided by Simon Shakeshaft, curator of the
National Football Shirt Collection. The
England Match Shirts website contains more shirts from the
Neville Evans Collection. The
FIFA WORLD CUP ITALY '90 lettering was removed when the uniform appeared in
match play for the first time, the
following year.
