England's Goalkeeper Uniform 1986 to 1988

Notes

This uniform was introduced for the 1986 World Cup and confirmed that grey was now the first-choice colour for England’s goalkeepers.  Because no other countries wore grey shirts, no change uniform was necessary and this uniform was worn in every game up until the second game of the 1988 European Championship, when a new green jersey appeared.  The all-grey kit did make one further appearance, however, against Sweden, the following season.  A blue number one adorned the back of the jersey, with a grey border, outlined in blue, although for the World Cup, a plain blue number 1 was also worn on the left side of the shorts, above the Umbro logo - unlike the 1982 Finals, where the number was positioned on the right thigh.

The shoulders were blue, as were the elbow pads, which ran down to the blue cuffs. Padded panels were also added to the seams of the shorts. Like the outfield 1986 World Cup shirts, Peter Shilton’s jersey initially had the words FIFA WORLD CUP MEXICO’86 underneath the emblem and these were removed after the tournament.
