Description
Blue long-sleeved shirts with wing collars, with light-blue stripe near the edge and light-blue cuffs, with blue stripe near the edge. Thick light-blue upper-chest panel, with two single light-blue stripes below and then a thicker light-blue band below that. Red, white and blue Admiral logo on right breast and emblem on left breast. White number one on the reverse in the same font as the outfield shirt numbers.
Variations
  • Nigel Spink wore number 13 in Melbourne.

Appearances

2.5 - Peter Shilton

0.5 - Nigel Spink

  • Shilton was captain for all three games.

  • Spink replaced Shilton at half-time in Melbourne to make his only appearance in an England shirt.

Clean Sheets

2 - Peter Shilton

0.5 - Nigel Spink

  • The only goal conceded on this tour was an own goal by Phil Neal, in Melbourne.

Captains

3 - Peter Shilton

  • Although Bryan Robson had returned as captain against Scotland at Wembley, he did not go on the tour as Manchester United had flown to Swaziland for an end-of-season tournament, so Shilton, once again, took the armband.

  • When Shilton was substituted at half-time in Melbourne, Terry Butcher took the captain's armband.

Unlike the 1981 yellow uniform, this short-lived shirt, which was only worn on England's Australian tour, had no accompanying shorts and socks, so the goalkeeper wore the same shorts and socks as the outfield players.

The shirt pictured above is the one issued to Joe Corrigan for the 1982 World Cup in Spain and is part of the Neville Evans Collection at www.englandmatchshirts.com (photo kindly supplied by Simon Shakeshaft). There is no Admiral logo, because the Football Association were under the false impression that manufacturers were not allowed to advertise on the kits.
