Description
Yellow long-sleeved shirts with wing collars, with black stripe near the edge and black cuffs, with yellow stripe near the edge. Thick black upper-chest panel, with two single black stripes below and then a thicker black band below that. Red, white and blue Admiral logo on right breast and emblem on left breast. Black number one on the reverse in the same font as the outfield shirt numbers. Black shorts with yellow split-seams containing two black stripes towards each edge. Black socks with a thick yellow hoop, overlaid with black logos, but without the 'Admiral' lettering.
Variations
  • The Admiral logos were removed from the shirts and shorts for the opening match of the 1982 World Cup final tournament against France, although Peter Shilton wore socks displaying the Admiral logo which he wore for the first four games of the tournament.

  • Peter Shilton wore number 22 in each match of the 1982 World Cup, including, in white, on the right thigh, in the same font as on the outfield players' shorts (different to the shirt number font).

  • Peter Shilton wore the Admiral logo on the right thigh, above the number on his shorts, in all but the first game of the 1982 World Cup.

  • Peter Shilton did not wear the Admiral logo on his shirt in the 1982 World Cup against France and Spain and in the second halves against Czechoslovakia and West Germany.

  • Peter Shilton wore the 1974 goalkeeper's socks against Spain in the 1982 World Cup.

  • The Admiral logo was worn on the left thigh in every match following the 1982 World Cup.

  • Peter Shilton wore the old-style number one font on his back for the game against West Germany at Wembley, in 1982 (without the flick at the top).

  • A white logo with 'Admiral' in red was worn at the base of the shirt number from the end of the 1982-83 season, but possibly sooner.

  • Ray Clemence wore black tracksuit trousers when this kit was worn for the last time, in Luxembourg.

Appearances

17 - Peter Shilton

4 - Ray Clemence

2 - Joe Corrigan

  • Four of Shilton's appearances were as captain.

  • Clemence made his 61st and last England appearance on the last occasion that this kit was worn.

  • Corrigan made his ninth and last international appearance in Iceland, when the original B international was elevated to full international status, at the request of the Icelandic FA.

Clean Sheets

12 - Peter Shilton

3 - Ray Clemence

1 - Joe Corrigan

  • England did not concede a goal in their first four matches wearing this kit and then only conceded one goal in the five World Cup matches in 1982.

Penalties Conceded

3 - Peter Shilton

  • The third penalty was scored by Denmark at Wembley and was a crushing blow to England's chances of qualifying for the 1984 European Championship. The Danes ultimately qualified, ahead of England.

Captains

4 - Peter Shilton

  • Shilton was skipper for the first four matches of 1983, due to injuries to Bryan Robson and Ray Wilkins.

When England switched to this new goalkeeping kit, Ron Greenwood was still alternating his 'keepers. Ray Clemence and Peter Shilton were both world-class custodians and they had won the highest honours at club level.

When it came to the 1982 World Cup squad, however, Clemence was given the number one shirt, whilst Shilton wore 22. Yet it was the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper that was chosen for the first game of the tournament, against France, and his performances in Spain, conceding only one goal in five games, kept him there, though his two understudies, Clemence and Corrigan both received treatment for injuries during the tournament.

Shilton maintained his position throughout the next season (and for a further seven years), finally shaking off Clemence's claim, and surpassing his caps total. Clemence made two more appearances, both against Luxembourg, before his international career came to an end.

We are grateful to Simon Shakeshaft, curator of the National Football Shirt Collection at England Match Shirts, for the photo above of a shirt worn by Ray Clemence and part of the Neville Evans Collection.

These goalkeeper shirts became commercially available towards the end of 1982, presumably for Christmas shopping. The price of this Admiral jersey ranged from £9.99 for a 26" chest shirt, to a whacking £11.99 for a 38" chest shirt. The shorts started at a modest £5.00, to the larger £5.50.  All socks were £2.25.
