England's Goalkeeper Uniform 1981 to 1983

Notes

This yellow shirt was part of a uniform that consisted of black shorts and black stockings.

A black number 1, in the same style as on the back of the 1980 white shirt and the 1982 red shirt, was worn on the back of the jersey, although Peter Shilton wore his squad number (22) throughout the 1982 World Cup.  It also appeared in white on his right thigh for the duration of the tournament.  The number on the back of the previous yellow goalkeeper’s jersey (1974-81) had been red.

Only three England goalkeepers wore this uniform. Peter Shilton made the most appearances, with 18, 5 of which were as captain. Ray Clemence appeared 4 times, including on his 61^st and last England appearance, and Joe Corrigan made just 2 appearances in it, the second of which was his 9^th and last international.

These goalkeeper shirts became commercially available towards the end of the 1982, presumably for the 1982 Christmas shopping occasion.  The price of this Admiral jersey ranged from £9.99 for a 26" chest shirt, to a whacking £11.99 for a 38" chest shirt.  The shorts started at a modest £5.00, to the larger £5.50.  All socks were £2.25.
