Notes
A red number 1, in the
same style as on the back of the 1974 yellow jersey, was worn on the back of
the jersey.
For the first two
games in which the blue jersey was worn, plus the final game of the American
Bicentennial Tournament (v. Team America in Philadelphia on 31/05/76), Ray
Clemence wore the same shorts and socks as the outfield players. When
Joe Corrigan wore the blue jersey, he wore the black shorts and socks from the
1974 yellow uniform. This may have prompted a variation to the blue
jersey, which appeared in 1981.
The 1976 version had
two white stripes and a red stripe down the arms, complementing the red, white
and blue shorts and socks. However, the black shorts and socks from the
1974 yellow uniform had yellow stripes.
A new version was
introduced in 1981, though it only appeared twice. Instead of the white
and red stripes down the arms, it had two yellow and black stripes, thus matching the
black shorts and socks. It also had a yellow number 1 on the back, instead of
red and the new-style red, white and blue Admiral logo.

|
When England traveled
to Romania for a World Cup qualifying match in October 1980, Ray Clemence
would probably have expected to wear a blue jersey, as Romania wore yellow
shirts. However, he took to the field in a green adidas jersey. It was
identical to the one worn by the Romanian ‘keeper, except it had no emblem. As Clemence wore the black shorts and socks, normally worn with the yellow
jersey, we can only assume that England accidentally packed the yellow jersey
and were left with no option but to borrow an alternative from their hosts.
Whatever the reason, it also affected the Under-21 team, because John Lukic
wore a plain blue jersey in the previous day's Under-21 international.'

1. Ray Clemence wearing the
revised version of the 1976 Goalkeeper Uniform,
against Brazil at Wembley, 12th
May 1981.
2. Ray
Clemence, in the 1976 blue jersey, with ‘complementary’ red and white stripes,
collects the ball against the Netherlands at Wembley on February 9th,
1977.
3. A back view of Joe Corrigan, punching clear
against Australia in Sydney,
on May 31st, 1980. The black shorts and
socks, with yellow stripes,
against the blue and red jersey, may have prompted
the FA and
Admiral to produce a new blue jersey, replacing the red edgings with
yellow.
4. Ray
Clemence orchestrates his defence, against Romania in
Bucharest on October 15th,
1980. His borrowed green jersey
probably made him the only England player ever
to wear
adidas kit in an international match.
