Started his football career playing inside-right as a schoolboy in Liverpool, playing for Liverpool Schoolboys and then Lancashire Schoolboys. Joined the Littlewoods staff and amateur forms with Eerton FC in 1960 and signed his first professional contract with in March 1963, subsequently converting to a wing-half and remained until his injury-forced retirement (left knee) on 28 February 1974.
