According to the 1871 census, Gilbert is boarding with Elizabeth Lockett and her daughter on Chorley Road in Chelford.
His parents are Thomas Wardle, a silk dyer, and Elizabeth (née Wardle). 

 

According to the 1881 census, scholar Gilbert is the oldest of the six children living at home with two servants at 62 Edward Street in Leek.

 

According to the 1891 census, Gilbert, a silk dyer, is the eldest of the seven children at home with their parents, a guest and three servants at 54 Edward Street in Leek. His father is a silk and calico printer.
Gilbert had an older brother, Herbert, who died as a three-day old and Gilbert was in fact, one of fourteen.

First marriage to Mary Blanche Challinor, on 27 April 1893 in St. Edward's Church in Leek.

Children Gilbert and Mary Wardle have two children together. Hilda (b.1897) and John Leeke (b.31 May 1899).
 

According to the 1901 census, Gilbert, still a silk dyer, is now married to Mary Blanche, and with two children, Hilda and John, they live at Southfields in Leek.
His wife died shortly after this cenus was completed, on 16 June. His mother died in Leek on 8 September 1902.

Second marriage to Katherine Fearon, on 19 April 1906 at St. Saviour Church in Paddington. Gilbert is a 43 year old widower, Katherine is a 26 year old spinster.

Children Gilbert and Katherine Wardle have six children together. Elizabeth (b.1907), Margaret Katherine (b.1909), twins Bridget and Thomas Fearon (b.15 April 1911) and another set of twins Geoffrey and Gilbert (b.23 September 1917).

His father died in Leek on 3 January 1909.
According to
the 1911 census, Gilbert, still a silk dyer, now married to Katherine, with two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, living back at 54 St Edward Street in Leek.

His wife, Katherine, died at Compton House on 13 December 1920, following a long illness.
According to
the 1921 census, Gilbert is now a widower and still a silk dyer, and lives with three of his children, Hilda, Gilbert and Geoffrey, and five servants at Compton House in Leek.

According to the 1939 register, Gilbert is a retired silk dyer living at Compton House with a single domestic help.
His youngest son, Gilbert, died at sea on 27 April 1940.
