According to the 1891 census, Arthur is the youngest of six children to William and Ellen (née Houlker). His widowed mother his the head of the household and is a cotton weaver. They live at 24 Bullen Street in Blackburn.

 

According to the 1901 census, fourteen year-old Arthur is still the youngest of the six children still living with their mother at 24 Bullen Street. He is now a jacquard machinist.

 

According to the 1911 census, Arthur is a professional footballer and is now just the youngest of four living with his mother at 24 Bullen Street.

"At Park-road Congregational Church, Blackburn, yesterday afternoon, the wedding took place of Mr. Arthur Cowell, Blackburn Rovers' international left full back, and Miss Mary Ann Knowles, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Knowles, 43, Lord Derby-street, Blackburn. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. Harrop. Mr. John Cowell, brother of the bridegroom, was the best man. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the Orange Hall. The honeymoon is being spent at the Isle of Man. A large number of presents were received."

"FAMOUS ROVER DIES
"Mr. Arthur Cowell, former England international and full back partner of the late Bob Crompton in Blackburn Rovers
championship teams of 1911-12 and 1913-14, died today at his home in Sandy-lane, Lower Darwen. He played for England against Ireland in 1910. Between the wars he became Rovers' head trainer for a time. He was afterwards in business with his son as a newsagent in Darwen"

Playing Career

Began at Blackburn St. Peter's FC, a Sunday School side, before he joined Nelson FC in 1904, and joined Blackburn Rovers FC in 1905, hanging up his playing boots twenty years later, but remaining with the club in some capacity until 14 May 1937. He did guest with Burnley FC in 1916.

"After 32 years with Blackburn Rovers F.C., as player, trainer, and coach. Arthur Cowell
parted company with the club today. The Rovers announce that a new head trainer is to be appointed. Beyond confirming the fact that he had not voluntarily resigned, Cowell refused to comment on the matter." The Evening Telegraph, Friday, 14 May 1937.
