  John Henry Brown
Birth 19 March 1899 in Hodthorpe, Whitwell, Derbyshire [registered in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, June 1899]. His census returns state he was born in Whitwell, which is next to Hodthorpe.
 

According to the 1901 census, John H. is youngest of four children to George and Minnie (née Avins), living in Hodthorpe, Whitwell, near Worksop. His father is a self-employed bricklayer.

 

According to the 1911 census, John Henry is living with a younger sister and an older brother, and their parents. Living at 9 Dennis Street in Worksop. His father still a bricklayer.

Marriage to Bertha Harriet E. J. Peat [registered in Worksop, June 1920]. They had three children, Minnie Irene (b.17 August 1923), Derek Gerald George (b.21 October 1934) and Cynthia Maria (b.24 April 1942)
  According to the 1921 census, George is a miner and is now also married to Bertha. They live with his parents at 14 Dennis Street in Woksop.
  According to the 1939 register, John H., a publican, is married to 'record blocked' and living at 60 Lansdowne Road in Sheffield.
Death 9 April 1962 in Sheffield, aged 63 years 21 days [registered in Sheffield, June 1962].
Buried in City Road Cemetery, Sheffield. His wife was buried with him when she died on 2 April 1982.

Playing Career

Club(s) Started his career as a junior centre-forward when he played for local clubs Worksop Wesley FC and Netherton FC, took over goalkeeping duties before joining Worksop Town FC in 1919. When he was regarded as 'The Best Goalkeeper in the Midland League', Brown was transferred to The Wednesday FC on 23 February 1923 for £360 fee, and left Sheffield Wednesday FC on 17 September 1937 after they were relegated from the top tier, having made 465 league appearances. He joined Hartlepools United FC for a fortnight, being released after a solitary league appearance. After which he retired.

Beyond England

Worked as a collier in Manton before his Wednesday days. After retiring, though, he ran an off-licence in Sheffield, he then became a publican before becoming a newsagent in the Highfield area.
